They played it right. If they go with Renault, Honda is dead though. Why dead ?Because if Red Bull go with Renault it would mean two teams now giving up on Honda, they'd have details on current and future potential of what the Renault PU can do, and it would be only a back of the grid team that would get in bed with Honda and that would be for the $. Maybe Williams would take Honda since they're both in need of cash and expertise?
Regardless without a top tier team, I don't think Honda would bother to continue the investment. Maybe pull the plug and focus on bringing in a PU for the 2021 season.

I was thinking Williams as well but they are incapable to built a great car for almost 20 years now and Honda expertise will change nothing. Waste of time for Honda.

2019 RedBull Honda
Confirmed.
Contract length is 2 years, just enough to last till AM join with the new regs.
Will LAUGH MY FUCKING ASS OFF if DR or MV take the title in 2019 while Mr "GP2 Engine" Alonso putters around in the McLaren (or fails in Indycar)

Holy Crap, its happened... Aston Martin Red Bull-Honda Tag Heuer Racing... yeah lets roll with that hey I 'think' its a risk worth taking especially as McLaren has done the early donkey work for them, right move for Red Bull IMO, could be wrong though. And as you say Dogued, If RedBull-Honda takes the title, I actually think even just a few race wins next season would look quite bad for Mclaren/Alonso, heads will have to roll especially if Mclaren have another crappy season with what is meant to be a better power unit. Really looking forward to 2019 now!

I actually felt Renault deserved that roasting by Verslappen and his boss during the Hungarian GP. Looking at the points standings now, if the Renaults were reliable, both Redbull guys could easily be ahead of Bottas and Raikkonen.
It's highly frustrating when you have a crap engine which is dragging behind a great car (great car for real, sorry McLaren you snivelling liars).
