So when is the car actually going to be finished Hammer ? The whole thing? Because this is the first and biggest part of the project....the engine/gb conversion and new brakes installed. I gave my car in last Friday, they said 2 weeks or so to be done and ready. (In mechanic speak, it's probably 3-4 weeks) And then comes new rims (bought and ready) + tyres, new interior, new lights installed (should arrive today by DHL), new bodywork (front lip/sideskirts/rear bumper), new alarm system. So I'd say there's still a ways to go yet for this thread.

Wiring shit like that up is easy, it's really not as hard as people think it is. I'd agree, and honestly speaking I can wire that shit up. But try fixing it into the chassis. I saw for myself how long it took for them to replace these E34 lights (from originals to current ones I have), you need to remove part of the front bumper to get the lights out and back in. A shop actually took almost 2 hours.

A shop actually took almost 2 hours. A huge amount of things can be done pretty easy, just use a bit of common sense and logic (I know some people struggle with that! haha) but a lot of people are too scared of giving something a try because they don't want to ruin it or get stuck and have to take it into a shop half done or in a worse state than before. The amount of times I've caught family members either going to pay for someone to do something for them or purchased a new product to replace the slightly broken old one because they don't know how to repair it is just shocking. I stop them and either do it for them or help them do it and save them a ton of money! Also while some things like removing something (or putting it back) appear difficult once you've done them once they become easy, it's like riding a bike! My uncle couldn't work out how to replace the lights on his car, you actually had to remove the front bumper to do it and when I told him he changed his mind from wanting to do it himself to getting a mechanic to do it. He called up his garrage and they quoted £80 to replace the broken bulb as it required extra disassembly. I convinced him to try and do it himself/with me because it really didn't look that hard to do We tried to remove the bumper and were a little stuck but we figured out how to do it eventually and it made it easy once we knew how, from here on it was easy, we could now unscrew a shield sort of thing, remove the bulbs, put new ones back in, put the shield back on and then the bumper was easy to fix back on. I told my Dad about the car requiring the bumper to be removed to replace the bulbs and he didn't believe me, there's not many cars designed like this thankfully but there are still quite a few. #StupidFuckingDesign

At that time they designed it with the mindset of "no ones tinkering with this for the next 20 years" which is why the chassis and components last till today. So ease of replacing/fixing stuff wasn't a priority. Part of the reason why I still fancy these old cars. They were designed by engineers, and today the engineers have been replaced by accountants. "This thing needs to start failing in 5 years tqvm".

But then again companies make/design products to try and make it hard/annoying for consumers to fix them themselves, thus making them need to take their product into a shop to get it repaired and in a lot of cases get rid of it and buy a new one. It's one reason a hell of a lot of manufacturers for phones don't do removable batteries as much. My phone broke last month, I purchased a second hand phone online that was "broken" and all it needed was a battery replacement, rear glass replacement and digitizer replacement. I took them out of my broken phone and now have a perfectly working phone again. All for just £30 yet if I took it into a shop to get repaired they would have told me I need a new phone due to the age of the phone, If it broke about a year ago they would of quoted a repair of well over £150

The way I look at repairs / maintenance for my car. Why waste my time doing my own maintenance, when I can afford to pay someone else to do it, whilst I spend quality time with my family.

Oh that's a perspective thing. I don't think anyone actually does the long maintenance and repairs to save costs...okay, some of them do but enthusiasts just love being hands on with their own machinery. I think Wß relates to this. For me, I love to be hands on as much as I can while it's feasible. Because yeah, the time issue, and also the risk of fucking it up which will hurt a lot more than letting some other experienced guy do it, and I watch or help with the repairs... which I've done before with my regular mechanic.

I wouldn't let just anyone touch my Porsche when I know I can do a better job at whatever it may need than 90% of the so called professionals out there. The trick is knowing where your boundaries are and then take it to the best craftsman money can buy.
But yeah, today I changed out of the winter tires and put the summer rubber back on. My wife cleaned the summer wheels, my dogs were hanging out there with me and then I drove my son to the his competition with the new set of summer wheels. See, that's family quality time, you can do both.
