EPIC LAP.
That's all. Ferrari must feel like Godzilla arrived and shat all over their garage today.
Vettel probably wanted to make sure his car stayed in 1 piece today and got his ass kicked by a Redbull as well. Fastest car, but low morale.

I can't believe Hamilton got pole... it looked like Ferrari were going to dominate and they should have but he did an amazing lap and Ferrari struggled for various reasons.
Red Bull also sandbagged in FP3, they were 1.x off the pace in FP3 but finished 0.3 behind pole.
Alonso sounded very happy about being P11, thats a good position for the race tomorrow. You can start on the ultrasofts and avoid using the hypersofts in the race as they look like they're going to go off fast.

Is everyone else rewatching the pole lap over and over again? Why is it just Ryry and me here? Fun fact: Williams cars were nearly FIVE seconds off the pole lap. I mean honestly, what are they doing...racing or ping pong??

Totally unexpected to see a Merc on pole here... Ferrari's chances are slipping...
I've placed my pool picks btw, although there's no pool thread.
DM me if there are any issues with receiving my picks 😊

That was a stonker of a lap!! where did that come from!! ( sorry got house guests, but still watched quali) I really thought this track would be damage limitation for Lewis and he puts it on pole! That lap reminded me of the Senna lap when Senna said he felt like he’d gone onto another level. I couldn’t believe that time!
Shout out for Max too. Up there ahead of the Ferraris. Hope they get away cleanly now 😬

Sounds like the Championship is already over, the way everyone including Vettel is talking. What can you do....when your rival is just, too good? You can't blame a 1st tier budget-wise team losing to a 1st tier brain-wise team. BTW I really just feel like stamping Grosjeans face over and over again with studded boots. That guy just annoys me so much.

I used to like Perez but I’m rapidly revising my opinion!! I think he’s a selfish driver. I can’t understand why Force New Team are keeping him rather than Ocon.....Well I can, money.

Yeah I used to like Perez too but Singapore showed he's got quite a stink underneath that quiet guy exterior. The clash with Ocon was questionable, I find his words quite untrustworthy these days and then losing his head completely and using the car as a weapon against Sirotkin...that was Schumacher-esque.
Deserved an immediate black flag for that one, or at the very least a 10 second stop go (what Vettel did in Baku but at racing speed!). Drive through is for driving infringements, not vile behaviour.

So... feeling a bit better no, I'll give my thoughts on the race! Hamilton did a masterful drive! A good start, held 1st place and then had a perfect safety car restart managing to instantly pull out 1 second on Vettel. He backed the pack up early on in the race to make sure everyone's tyres and temperatures struggled and then suddenly started going 2 seconds a lap faster which forced Ferrari into pitting Vettel early as they thought Mercedes were going to pit at the end of the next lap and tried to get an undercut, Hamiltons tyres easily held on for those 2 laps and he comfortably came out ahead of Vettel. After his pit he just kept a good pace and kept the gap at 3~ seconds for a while and this slowly increased, it obviously decreased suddenly on one lap with the traffic but as soon as he was through he pulled out a gap fast to make sure he was safe. Vettel had a poor race in my opinion, he got a good start and overtook Verstappen which was pretty much expected but the strategy was awful, they pitted way too early and went onto a tyre that wasn't going to comfortably make it to the end of the race... Vettel came out behind Perez who obviously wasn't going to let Vettel through so it made it very easy for Hamilton and it also made it easy for Verstappen. Verstappen had a good race, he was unlucky with the race start because we knew there was a crash and the FIA AGAIN just like Belgium waited until Vettel had overtaken before calling a safety car... however in the race Verstappen kept his tyres good in his first stint and waited for Vettel to push to which Verstappen reacted to and then as Vettel pitted Verstappen did 3x 1:45 laptimes which gave him just about enough time to come out side by side with Vettel. Vettel got held up by traffic which lost him 3~ seconds and Verstappen lost 2.5 seconds in the pits. So Verstappen would have had to pass him on his outlap if it wasn't for the traffic OR sit behind and overtake later on in the race once Vettels tyres had gone off. Bottas had a poor race, if you are going to be that far 2+ seconds a lap slower than your teammate then you should be a wingman or be replaced. The only reason he kept 4th place was because of the insane dirty air. Raikkonen had an okay race... he couldn't pass Bottas because of the dirty air. Ricciardio had a decent race... he couldn't overtake Raikkonen because of the dirty air. Alonso had a great race, he started on the ultras (I would have started on the softs if I was him) which was the faster strategy and drove fast and smooth. He was only JUST finished the race without being lapped. He was 1 second away from being lapped so if the race was 1 lap more then Hamilton would have lapped him Sainz also had a good race, did basically the same as Alonso and as a result finished just behind Alonso. Although in the race Sainz was 2~ seconds slower on fastest lap. Perez... it was bad enough taking out your teammate at the start, I still don't know how the fuck he "didn't see" Ocon... but then later on in the race the clash with SIrotkin was just fucked up. It was a straight and he turned suddenly into him, a drive through was very very lenient, I personally think a stop-go or a disqualification is warranted for that.

"I'm sorry if I blocked anyone, it was not my intention," Grosjean said. "I was fighting with Sergey, who was playing a little bit of go-kart racing out there.
"I couldn't really slow down. As soon as I passed [Sirotkin], I let Lewis by."

So it was okay because he got passed the guy he was battling even though he screwed the race leader by over 4 seconds. And he couldn't slow down? I don't recall any complaints about his brakes not working during the race? Oh man please let me meet him at a dark alley somewhere.

Ryry, Alonso had no choice but to start on the Ultra, he completed a fast lap in Q2 so had to start on those tyres regardless of grid position, the only way to get a free choice now is to not complete a lap in Q2 Other than that good write up

So Alonso was free to choose? I was thinking at the time, that he was actually better off starting 11th and getting free tyre choice than getting into Q3. That said, rules change so much I may have missed an update.

Late to the party guys, had a death in the family that I had to travel to Florida for and then got stuck there trying to come back with massive flight delays due to the hurricane. Anyways... what a Qualifying session!!! Oh yeah, the unexpected race win was unexpected, but maybe we need to dig below the surface a bit more. Lemme go read all of your juicy commentary.
