So the co-pilot brought the plane down due to alleged mental illness. Maybe this could trigger airlines to ramp up their mental tests on pilots psychological health before handing them the reins to take on 150-200 souls on board.

The guy had his trainng interrupted because if mental health issues, but was then cleared to fly.
My immediate thought when I heard how it had happened was, you never leave one crew menpmber alone in the cockpit. Apparantly that's normal procedure in the states. Some airlines in Europe insist on it, others don't. It isn't a European requirement. It's now being looked at. Seems a bloody obvious thing to me. Gotta hand it to the states on this one!

The air travel statistics (more ppl die driving rather than flying) don't look too hot now do they. Ok its still better but there's genuine fear now in flying. A few of us were planning a holiday in the next few months and one of my friends was like "Preferably somewhere which doesn't need a plane to get there".

I heard about those practise runs on the radio today. I'm afraid I have no sympathy at all for that co - pilot, depression or no depression, he didn't have to take 180 innocent people with him. Also Lufthansa have to bare some responsibility for allowing him to fly. He'd twice been suspended for depression. You can't mess with people's lives like that. He was in a position of responsibility.
