I don't think your request for an update was unreasonable, but the line
"If you can't do the job, don't want to or can't do it in an acceptable/decent amount of time due to being busy then we can end the contract and I will hire a different freelancer."
I think was a bit harsh to insinuate he was unable to do the task, and then threaten to take way the contract, for a request for a first update especially if you haven't specified a timescale with him.

My 0.02 cents worth RyRy ....I think its more a case of misunderstanding. Look at his command of english, it's pretty average. When he asked 'are you in a hurry' he was probably being sincere (I say PROBABLY) and wondering how quickly you want it. However....your response could've been seen as a sort of a 'threat' which might've offended him. If you had stopped at 'right direction'...maybe everything would've been cool and he would give you a proper response. I don't know, for me I would be kind of annoyed by his initial response but I'd give him another chance by saying something like everything you said until 'right direction' followed up with, "...could I get an update sometime tomorrow?" and see exactly what his commitment to my project is. EDIT aha just read ichabod and WBs post, so I'm not alone in this.

I think RyRy was in a pissi mood. Communication is key and I'd actually send an apology with clear indication of what you want and when you'd like it by. Programmers are precise beings by nature.

I think was a bit harsh to insinuate he was unable to do the task, and then threaten to take way the contract, for a request for a first update especially if you haven't specified a timescale with him. I didn't insinuate that at all or at least I didn't mean to if that's how you read it. I just gave him a chance to say he was too busy/couldn't do it... etc (he has 4 other jobs on his profile that he is currently doing) as a problem with a lot of freelancers is they say they can do the job or are working on the job when they are actually doing other jobs or they are learning how to do it or they are re-outsourcing the job to another person. The freelancer market is full of people, competition is rife and freelancers constantly say they can do the job easy, can start right away or they'll say it should take 5 hours (Job should take 2 hours) but they end up taking up 1-2 days to complete it. He apparently has "15 years experience" and claims to know multiple coding languages, someone with that much experience should be able to do the job in 2~ hours, max of 3 hours not 3-4+ days, bare in mind in his proposal he said: which as far as I am aware means he'll be starting right away as I sent him an offer 15~ mins after his proposal. When he asked 'are you in a hurry' he was probably being sincere (I say PROBABLY) and wondering how quickly you want it. I'd already given him 3+ days for a job that should take 2~ hours or so for someone with 15+ years experience and especially considering he However....your response could've been seen as a sort of a 'threat' which might've offended him. It most certainly was a "threat" (sounds very hostile), I'm paying good money for a task that should be a walk in the park for him. If he can't satisfy my more than reasonable patience with waiting 3+ days then I will end the contract and hire someone who can do the job. I'm not there to make friends, I'm there to get a job done. Just like in the real world, if you are asked to do a job at work and you take 3+ days analyzing some very clear instructions, you would be fired and replaced with someone competent. Not good first impressions by him, I would have got my regular devs to do the task but one is already doing stuff and the other is on holiday. For their first tasks with me they did a very good job in a reasonable amount of time, they didn't do nothing for 3+ days after saying they can start straight away. I think RyRy was in a pissi mood. Communication is key and I'd actually send an apology with clear indication of what you want and when you'd like it by. Programmers are precise beings by nature. Nooo, I wasn't. Read above (all of them)

RyRy, there's nowt as queer as folk. Some of my biggest headaches in my career by far have been from the staff I managed not the children I taught. The only advice I can offer is be ultra professional. Be very clear about what you expect and have measurable outcomes. Give people a chance ( there may be a gem out there who just needs a different approach) but be firm as well. If they don't reach the outcomes you stipulate, a reminder/ warning then out. You're employing these people so this is your game.

You're employing these people so this is your game. Oh I'm more than fair. A lot of freelancers do the whole "I can do it" then struggle doing it, because the most important thing to them is getting the contract, some freelancers are pushy and try and rush you into hiring them because a lot of people feel like they can't end a contract after they have started one, I've hired enough freelancers to know when to put my foot down, make it ultra clear they need to deliver. If I hadn't have said anything other than what WB said I should have stopped at I wouldn't see an update until end of the week. 7+ days for a 2 hour job... You have to chase a lot of freelancers for updates, progress... etc because loads will work on 4-5+ jobs at once and only give your job an hour a day when they could do 2 hours at once, finish it and then move onto a new job. They take on more than they can chew basically. Therefore I think I was pretty fair with him, if not... oh well there are more freelancers out there that will do a better, faster job. The good freelancers/devs will give you updates without you needing to ask and will get the job done ASAP even if that means staying up to 3am (just an example).

We had lunch there and were going to run into the market to order some goodies for this weekend and decided to just go early Friday. As it turned out, she was at the market getting a tour. Would have been nice to bump into her. Everyone is posting pics of her now.

Yes, it's been all over social media and on the main tv news.
Unbelievable what they did! I imagine he must be in line for massive compensation. And Unitied Airlines have terrible press. Loads of people saying they won't ever fly with them again. What were they thinking??

On the radio I was listening to last night, they say it knocked 4% off their value - but by close of play had gone back up to only a 1% drop.
People have short memories I think. If the price of their flights is right, people will soon tart using.
