They got shut down by button and raikkonen! I didn't seem them talk to Raikkonen about it. But Button clearly didn't understand the question. They asked if he could of gotten out of the car had a Halo and button replied something like "well he got out today, so there shouldn't be any problem with it" At the end of the day, if the car is upside down the Halo WILL reduce the gap they have to get out and WILL reduce their ability to get out. And imagine if there was an engine fire at the same time .....

And imagine if there was an engine fire at the same time ..... He understood eventually, he talked about the super low risk of a fire hurting them so needing to get out fast isn't a problem.

Button would be doing his political, 'I'm a nice boy' , creeping. Probably because Lewis said ' I'm not having that on my car, I hope there's an option because I don't want that on my car'. And duly got reprimanded ( or frowned upon, can't remember ) for not being positive about it.

Button would favour a concept where drivers just sit in the pitlane and have remote controls to control their cars on track, that is even safer. As long as the paycheck is the same of course.

Yeah I guess you never get engine fires with flames shooting out of the air inlet scoop. Just ask Kimi. They don't endanger the driver, Kimi could have sat there for a long long time. It's not like it will take marshal's 5+ mins to get to the scene of a crash with fire extinguishers. The fuel tanks are much much safer now a days in F1 with insanely low risk of an explosion of fire so the fires can be put out fairly easy. Just look at Kimi's car today it required 4 small squirts to make sure the fire was 100% put out, the first squirt was more than good enough to put the fire out. Halo is much much much safer than no halo.

Mercedes almost retired Risberg from the Australian GP due to issues with overheating brakes. Also, at the end if the race they didn't think he'd make it on his tyres, Five laps from the end they expected the tyres ( rear left I think) to fall off the cliff and he would be unable to defend. It was a great season opener. Yeah the guy I root for didn't win, but it's always more fun when he comes back like a powered up pack man.
1) congratulations to Haas, they did was Marusia, Manor, Virgin, Lotus_Renault, HRT, Caterham or whatever other umpteen names I'm missing for the three new teams that came on board in 2011. 'Merica!
2) That Alonso wreck has been the most dramatic accident in recent years, it's a testament to the cars that he came out pretty much unscathed. I think there was blame on both him and Gutierrez on that though.
3) For anyone that didn't notice it, the Lewis/Rosberg rivalry is still sportsmanlike, it was nice to see Lewis pulling up along Rosberg at the end to give him the thumbs up, Rosberg won the day.
4) Mercedes are still beyond everyone's reach, talk of Ferrari's great strides have been greatly exaggerated. They are still clearly a notch down. Forza Ferrari, bring on 2017.
5) I actually like the three compound in race tire choice. It made for a lot of interesting racing today. Without it, it would have been less of a race.
6) It was the best real racing day since the Bahrain battle between the Mercs in 2014.
7) it was the first time I've ever seen Mercedes think on their feet, it cost them races last year, today they salvaged a 1-2 that had more than gone sideways. The tons of times testing on the medium compound paid off right away for them.
8) Kyviat two years in a row doesn't make the start, that is one unluky baastadd.
I'm going to go read the thread comments now.

I'm going to go read the thread comments now. Re 1) Yeah but Hass lucked into it pretty bigtime and they pretty much have Ferrari's entire 2015 car so it's no doubt they did pretty good. Re 2) Yes, rather impressive that he walked away without even requiring tiny bit of medical assistance. Re 3) Yeah I spotted that, very nice to see although if you look in that instance and when getting out the car it was Hamilton who approached Rosberg. Interestingly when getting their hats and cleaned up a bit Vettel & Hamilton were the ones talking and getting along, I would have thought it would be either all 3 talking or Hamilton & Rosberg (Teammates) OR Rosberg & Vettel (Both German) Re 4) Yeah, Ferrari have made a huge improvement from 2015 to 2016 but Mercedes are still comfortably faster. Impressive yet again. Re 5) I loved it, the extra tyre compound really does make it interesting and opens it all up for even more strategies. We saw something like 9 different tyre strategies today! Re 6) I didn't think there was that much impressive racing because overtaking was stupidly hard. Hamilton overtook like 1 car, Rosberg overtook none, Vettel overtook at the start. Raikkonen overtook at the start... all the way down the field it was pretty dull for actual overtakes/battles. Just a series of Trulli trains. Re 7) They did well, even before the red flag came out they were looking comfortable to get the 1, 2 back but in the opposite order. They knew the medium tyre inside out where as Ferrari didn't know if it would last to the end so they went safe, not aggressive as they tried to say and that safe option was to keep a podium position and hope that Mercedes would suddenly drop loads of pace when their tyres died. Re 8) Poor kid, I hope next year he gets in the top 5 at Australia, it will feel like a win to him

He looked to have flown about 150 feet by my estimates...
Another thought on the race now that I've watched it again, Verstappen probably was faster than Sainz but it's a supremely difficult circuit to overtake one. Alot of people stuck behind others all race long. The fact that Hamilton moved back up the grid was a testament to the Mercedes strategizing because he really only overtook Massa near the start. A great pass too, but it is a tough tough circuit to overtake on.
There was no way Vettel was getting past and I don't think Ferrari have the race pace. All over the sites it's a spin about how Ferrari would have won had they matched Rosberg's strategy, but Rosberg kept within touching distance of Vettel with mediums, while Vettel was on super softs. The Mercedes is very much still a best that's far out of reach. At least that's what was evident to me in Melbourne.

The 3 tyre choice would have been interesting if there wasn't a red flag. The suggestion that Hamilton would have won tho is a bit of a stretch. Vettel had 26s on Hamilton at the time of the red flag.

That's true dogued. But Vettel had to make at least one more pit stop,probably two and Ferrari are uncertain how their medium tyres would work. Hamilton didn't have to stop again, he was booted till the end. All the other frontrunners had to stop again.

Does that mean Rio gets Fan boost next time out hahaha RC: My point was Vettel had a full pit stop gap at the time of the red flag, and he was still pulling away. It's likely, if he pitted 1 more time, he would have been 20s ahead of Hamilton by the end. Now if that Red Flag had happened 2 laps earlier.....

Coulda, shouda, woulda... we know one thing, the Ferrari can't overtake Hamilton on old old rubber. Speaking of, what was the reason given for his cocked up start? That twice now that an aborted start and lapping around again has caused him to really blow the start.
The thing that was most critical yesterday IMO was Mercedes making the right call twice. They out thought Ferrari on strategy, that's new territory for them.
