It is a problem. But some teams blocked price capping on engines. *cough *Ferrari *cough* . ( not sure I did the *cough* thing right.....but always wanted to do it. )

Didn't know where to put this so I just put it here. Wasn't to impress reading it According to reports in Germany, Williams, Manor and Force India will attempt to complete the season with four engines rather than five to save on the amount they have to pay Mercedes.
AMuS report that it will save each team 1.5m Euros per engine and quote Williams Pat Symonds as saying: "The money for the fifth engine, we would rather invest in the car".
The German publication claims Force India ran on the lowest possible power settings in Bahrain during practice, which would explain their lowly 15th and 17th positions in Practice Two.Kind of lame if teams don't even want to use the 5th engine to save some coin. Won't be long till someone like Sauber will try to do a whole season on 1 engine because they can't afford another one. Are engine prices so expensive that teams aren't going to use their whole allocation. To me that is a problem IMO. The flip side is the engines are not only fast but damned reliable at this point as well. The fact that they can consider this is pretty remarkable. The financial situation is the problem though, not the complexity of the engines. There's about 12 million a pice for each of the bottom six team if Ferrari wasn't getting 70 million just for showing up. IMO, that's a bigger issue than engine cost. They also already agreed to drive the engine cost down to 12 million for the year by 2019 from what I recall.

It's an alternative which the teams are choosing to exploit, looks like the Merc customer teams have an added benefit where they get so save quite a bit by choosing Mercedes engines!
Keeping themselves low profile in practice sessions doesn't matter, I'm sure they need to turn the wick up when they have to anyway. I wonder what could spinoff from this, would Renault and Ferrari customers be asking for a lower price for next year? I believe Merc are still the cheapest option out there of the 3 if not mistaken.

The original idea was to reduce the number of PUs to 4 this year anyway, just like the original idea was to have major updates once a year. Thanks to the non Merc engine makers we now see updates several times and completely unlimited development from next year. But Merc customers who already pay the lowest can use less engines, and have just one update a year and still be competitive. Yet its drivers with non Merc engines who are moaning about the high PU costs?

A good writeup over at Motorsport describing the gains in Ferrari's PU and how there's still much more to come from these little engines that could.

The new Tag ( Renault) engine is said to be half a second a lap faster. If so, this puts it just behind Merc in quali and equal or just ahead in the race. Always assuming of course that the Merc uses full power available. Red Bull have two very good drivers and a good chassis. Things could be about to get exciting!! Bring it on! If Hamilton starts having some better fortunes, the championship could hot up nicely, if this is the case

And Ferrari........Ferrari to fall further back? The passionate reds to continue screaming 'unfair advantage'? Ferrari actually benefited the most from the token system and the development freeze. It allowed them to cement 2nd place consistently for almost 2 years. This is the best run they have had in a decade. The 'unfair' rules have allowed Ferrari to keep Red Bull, McLaren, Williams and even Enstone behind them. Unfortunately, now the others have had a chance to catchup Ferari is back in mid field like its been for most of the last 3 decades apart from the Brawn era Even McLaren Honda who started a year late have overtaken Ferari according to Bouiler When even Montezemolo is talking about Ferrari going backwards - and hes an expert, thats when things get farcical

Fast forward, March 2024, first day of the season for winter testing, and people will still be complaining about the 2014 engine regulations that gave Mercedes and insurmountable advantage. Making some head up ass commentary as to how the season's results are already determined. A dystopian F1 future? Maybe not.

Aerodynamicists get all the glory, but the engineers don't. Suck it baby!
