GPUpdate 13:28 – Pascal Wehrlein becomes the second rookie on the Formula 1 grid for the 2016 season after confirmation of his deal with Manor Racing. GPUpdate.net provides an overview of the 21-year-old's career to date.
Wehrlein, who holds dual German and Mauritian nationalities, began karting in 2003, working his way up to the highly competitive KF2 category by 2009, where he finished fifth overall in the ADAC Kart Masters.
For 2010, he graduated to single-seaters in the ADAC Formel Masters, taking one pole, one victory and three further podiums en route to sixth in the standings – Richie Stanaway was a comfortable champion.
Wehrlein remained in the championship in 2011, this time notching up seven poles, eight wins and five more rostrum finishes to claim the title on 331 points, 21 ahead of second-placed Emil Bernstorff.
Formula 3 was the logical next step, Wehrlein racking up 10 podiums, including a mid-season victory, en route to second in the 2012 Euro Series, 14 points shy of fellow Mercedes-backed Daniel Juncadella.
Wehrlein also finished fifth at the Masters of Formula 3 at Zandvoort and fourth at Macau.
In 2013, Wehrlein started out in FIA European Formula 3, which took over from the Euro Series, grabbing a victory and two podiums at the Monza opener, before being placed in the DTM with Mercedes.
He remained in the DTM for 2014, taking on a works seat, and became the series' youngest race winner – aged 19 – at the Lausitzring, following which he was named reserve at Mercedes' Formula 1 outfit.
Wehrlein stepped up his Formula 1 duties in 2015, taking part in multiple test sessions for Mercedes and Force India, while he continued full-time in the DTM and was crowned its youngest champion.
Wehrlein will make his Formula 1 debut in 2016 with the Mercedes-powered Manor team.
