Ive just got 2 things left on my car build, fix the wing mirror that someone kicked off just before i went to Silverstone, and replace the cover for my towing eye my mate lost after i drove into a ditch. I get the feeling Hammer might beat me to it though. Your instincts don't sound reliable at all.

Driving into a ditch or thinking you might finish your build before I get around to replacing a couple of bits of my car?

The thinking part of course.

meanwhile back at the ranch... Compare to the image on the previous page. New rotors and pads, new H&R sport springs and anti sway bars, new Koni Sport shocks, repacked and adjusted front bearings. Brake fluid flushed with ATE TYP200 performance fluid. Not visible, motor mounts replaced (transmission mount still in the box) Steering damper, and entire steering link replaced, included inner and outer ball joints. I picked up a brand new unit from a guy on the MBWorld forums for cheap so that's why I went ahead and replaced that. On the stereo (& interior) front. Installed a new Pioneer double din head unit with more bells and whistles than I'd probably use. Pretty much using is as an iPod and BT phone interface so I can use the GPS app from the phone. I replaced all of the crappy old OEM speakers, with a Rockford Fosgate 6" component for the front and Tweeters for the door pillars, Vifa 3 1/2 inch full range for "fill" in the rear door locations, and an 8 powered sub for the bass thump. I left the rear speakers on the hat shelf because they'd been replaced previously and decent enough JL Audio 6 inch. I'm using them turned down only for rear fill since the bass now comes primarily from the subwoofer. I kept the Alpine amp the previous owner had in the back. It's actually really good but I rewired EVERYTHING since it was sloppy and simply wouldn't do. I hadn't worked on a car stereo in 20 years... a lot of progress has been made in the audio quality, that coupled with the vault build quality of the MB, it sounds pretty fucking awesome. ...and here she is, almost complete, there's still a laundry list of things to "fix" but for the most part everything that wasn't working now works. Seat heaters, steering wheel stereo controls, passenger seat back would not tilt forward, couple of light bulbs out and the mouse condominium in the fresh air intake has been cleaned out. Literally a wad of nesting material the size of a watermelon! A lot of other minor cosmetic items tidied up, and the stance with the new suspension and +1 AMG wheels makes for a nice finish. In the next year or two I'll redo the rear bumper cover and take it to a dent wizard place to remove the half dozen or so dings it has but for the most part, not a bad ride to have as my new daily driver, 74k miles, not bad for a 2002 and one of the most beautiful and distinctive Mercedes Benz ever penned IMO. Keeping it for a good long while. Over to you Hammer

That's a decent looking stock 911.
Boom
On a serious note though, I'm starting to run out of patience. Am going to actively look for 2-3 other sources from end of this week, this guy isn't responding fast enough for me despite all the talk.

Guess what. Progress!!! Had a long chat with another source, saw his advert on a site and saw something very pretty. Made the call, apparently another enthusiast (who I happen to know) is doing an upgrade and his powerplant is available. And at a great price. I met the foreman today, had a long chat and told him I want a rebuild and to make sure any weak spots are negated. He's getting back with the list of options parts I'd choose to purchase for this engine. Behold, a V8 M60B40 5 speed. Mileage about 140000km. 280HP and 400NM torque. Would need to get a new water pump and a long shaft. I think I found the one! Just a couple of loose ends to confirm in regards to road tax queries and its a green light. From here on, everything else is in my hands finally.

So it begins! While it's out, just a little bit of massaging can get that HP up while you go through all the high failure components. I'm assuming you'll go with all new seals for the heads and do everything from the timing belt to the valve guides. Normally aspirated engines can't be massaged very much but you can get a lot more power with porting and polishing and hotter cams.
Not sure what the budget is but all of that is labor, that cams can be re surfaced and then ground. I'm happy for you man, it's been a long time coming.

Thanks so much. I'm excited. This guy is a lot more enterprising, seems a bit more committed in doing business. Here's a list of all optional parts the guy sent to me, with the rough pricing. I'm planning to get about 70% of them which are crucial, beltings, gaskets, oils of course. And the spark plugs and all the sensors. Longshaft, bracket mounting, waterpump I need, not optional. Figures in RM, conversion is $1 = RM4.4 for your converting pleasure. M60b40 1.complete engine gbox wiring ecu rm3.8k 2.engine bracket mounting rm600 3.brake hydraulic rm800 4.longshaft 600 5.cam sensor rm250 6.crank sensor rm230 7.knock/ping sensor rm180x2 8.waterpump rm280 9.thermostat rm80 10.valve cover gasket rm85x2 11.oilsump gasket em60 12.gbox filter rm125 13.oil filter rm35 14.ignition coil (optional) rm110x8 15.sparkplug rm15x8 16.gbox fluid rm38x7 17.engine oil rm125x2 18.waterpump & compressor belting rm110x2 19.belting tensioner bearing rm125x2 20.pcv valve rm180 21.exhaust piping rm600 22.gasket head rm280x2 23.labour rm3k

Get every sensor and every gasket replaced and do the belts as well. The coils are probably good, they either work or they won't. And it's something that you can easily replace later but at about 140k kilometers they're still way good. The water pump is probably still good but it's just so much easier to do while everything is out from a labor standpoint.
I don't see a timing belt or chain on the list, make sure you address that. What's listed as a brake hydraulic, long shaft and engine bracket are all probably very low wear items and you can probably save on those, the engine is relatively low mileage and things like that don't start going on German lumps until well over 250k so you don't have to address them now.

I assume its normal for the engine to sound like crap when it's bareboned without an exhaust? Sounds like 2 or 3 pistons have taken a holiday. Tmr I'm visiting it again with my trusted mech so he can check it out himself, and I'll be confirming/rejecting it. WISH ME LUCK PLS. Let this be the one. www.facebook.com/navin.jayachandran.1/videos/10155156749227427/Fook it looks like its not working. It's mp4 format, so don't know why? WB I'm gonna send it to you on fb. Let me know what you think.

it should be loud but not miss... I mean then it's like that there could be so many things that are simple like coils or plugs etc. If it turns smoothly (by hand) and there are no cracks then you're going to be addressing most of the things required to make it run anyway.
Good luck.

It's official! Took my trusted mechanic along to check it out again, he did most of the talking with the foreman of course. So the guy's gonna do a top overhaul, change all sensors, gaskets, and get the compulsory pieces together and then start the conversion. I'll be taking pics of the engine when the top is off, and hanging out at his place the day the engine is worked on just so I can be kinda hands on (and make sure all new parts are present). IT'S ON!

This forum is screwed. They've opened the engine and started the top overhaul now, I'm going tmr to take a bunch of pics.
Will try to make it low res.
