the other thing in the lower series is who's your competition. that's sometimes an unknown but you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a YouTube video of Vettel/Hamilton and Kubica slugging it out in a lower formula.

And the one Hamilton rated........Kubica!

Julien Febreau on Canal+ said Kubica uses his left arm/hand at 90% to turn the steering wheel. He did everything with it basically. His right arm/hand is useless. He also said Paul di Resta will replace Gasly for Austin. Tost isn't keen on welcoming Kvyat back.

Given that Febreau was the main one spreading that fake stewards report after the Baku special hearing, I'll stay clear of most of what is said there! Kubica certainly has issues, but he's won races and performed in other categories since the accident, including some decent times in F1 testing. I'd say it's more endurance testing than ability to turn a wheel.
As for Di Resta / Kvyat swap, I can't see that one happening. Tost may not be overly keen on Kvyat being back but they still have that seat to fill in 2018 and dumping him entirely right now would be a mistake unless they have a driver ready to step in for next season.

So, Updated after Japan, sill waiting on a couple of confirmations. Have dropped in what is believed to be a formality. Team | Driver 1 | Driver 2 | Mercedes | Lewis Hamilton | Valtteri Bottas | Ferrari | Sebastian Vettel | Kimi Raikkonen
| Red Bull | Daniel Ricciardo | Max Verstappen | Williams | Lance Stroll | | McLaren | Fernando Alonso
| Stoffel Vandoorne | Renault | Nico Hulkenburg | Carlos Sainz | Torro Rosso | Pierre Gasly |
| Haas | Kevin Magnussen
| Romain Grosjean | Sauber | Charles Leclerc | | Force India | Esteban Occon | Sergio Perez |
* BOLD confirmedRumoredWilliams - Kubica / Di Resta / Massa Torro Rosso - Kvyat Sauber - Giovinazzi / Wehrlein Torro Rosso have a bit of an issue. The main Honda candidate is Nobuharu Matushita, who is nowhere near getting a Super License. Their Junior program is also looking a bit threadbare at the moment with the highest candidate behind Gasly being Niko Kari (GP3) who is due to be dumped from the RBR program at the end of 2017. Sean Gelael, who got a run in Singapore & Malaysia is also way off getting a License. So could they look outside the RBR program and consider one of the F2 runners up (Markelov, Ghiotto, Rowland), or skip the junior classes and approach an ex driver? Would they consider a dumped Palmer or Ericsson? They have already said they won't touch Wehrlein. All in all, it looks like Kvyat might retain that seat, and 2019 isn't looking much brighter at the moment. Here's one so far from left field that once you finish laughing, you think about it and go "Hmmmm"...... Honda throw a boat of cash at Alonso and entice him to join Torro Rosso for 2018. STR will certainly be more open to designing a car around the PU, which may help with reliability. They have shown that their chassis skills aren't bad, and will be more than happy to offer clear #1 to Alonso. This also leave RBR with a nice little nest egg should their worst fears come to pass and Verstappen & Ricciardo both leave for Mercedes/Ferrari in 2019.

Williams are also apparently interested in Palmer too. Why doesn't your table have: Wehrlein at Sauber un-bolded. Kvyat at Toro Rosso un-bolded. Massa at Williams unbolded. You have Alonso & Leclerc listed even though neither of them are confirmed but at least Alonso is the current driver at McLaren Team | Driver 1 | Driver 2 | Mercedes | Lewis Hamilton | Valtteri Bottas | Ferrari | Sebastian Vettel | Kimi Raikkonen
| Red Bull | Daniel Ricciardo | Max Verstappen | Williams | Lance Stroll | Felipe Massa | McLaren | Fernando Alonso
| Stoffel Vandoorne | Renault | Nico Hulkenburg | Carlos Sainz | Torro Rosso | Pierre Gasly | Daniil Kvyat | Haas | Kevin Magnussen
| Romain Grosjean | Sauber | Charles Leclerc | Pascal Wehrlein | Force India | Esteban Occon | Sergio Perez |

You have Alonso & Leclerc listed even though neither of them are confirmed but at least Alonso is the current driver at McLaren As I said, it's what is believed to be a formality. Leclerc is around 99.9% certainly at Sauber next year, while Alonso is probably more like 95% at Honda. Massa is nowhere near a formality at Williams as they search every cupboard to replace him. At best he's a 50/50. Wehrlein is almost certainly NOT at Sauber next year. Kvyat meanwhile is just so hard to pin down. You're right, I should have had him in unbolded as STR have an option on him but damned if they aren't trying everything to replace him.

Pascal with going to be 23, just too young for the 25 year old liquor sponsorship thinggie Martini is bound to. I believe he'd have wound up at Williams otherwise. I think he may be out of a drive.
Seriously, I think both Massa and Kimi needed to make room. Kimi has another year, but Massa with the talent in the pipeline at the moment?

Massa, Ericsson and Romoan need to piss off and allow better drivers in. Everyone else should stay.

Kimi sells funny T-shirts and sounds funny and Vettel is his biggest fan so he should stay.

I really feel for Kvyat. There's an expression "Being in the right place at the right time", but I think he was in the right place at the wrong time from day 1. He stumbled into a handful of wins in junior categories just as the main RB Juniors being looked at had a poor run. He was the only RB option when Vettel suddenly announced he was going, after Buemi was dumped a few weeks prior. He wasn't ready mentally for the pressure that came with a top seat and he didn't have the "ego" of Max to offset that.

Nice to see Hartley get a another go but feel a little for Kvyat, he has been through a tough period by RB but he hasn't delivery when needed and his form is nothing compared to 2014. He'll probably join the ever growing Red Bull scrap heap of drivers IMO.
As for Hartley, he has to take this opportunity and show something and potentially put his hand up for a seat alongside Gasly for 2018.

2018 DRIVER NEWS
Kvyat will NOT be back at Torro Rosso according to the team. Hartley and Gasly will see out the season. This pretty much ends Kvyat's chances of staying in F1, unless he could convince Williams he's the best option for them.
On the subject of Williams, it will surprise absolutely nobody that Massa has said in an interview "it's impossible to believe that he will not have some issues" when speaking on Kubica, and "I don't think he's doing a great job in what he's racing as well" on the topic of Di Resta. He did add "Anyway, I'm not here to complain or say about anything, that's only my opinion" so it's all ok!

Just before the Brazilian GP....I wonder if we're going to have another "walk of retirement" up the pitlane this year as well, it would be too funny.
