FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 20172016 Qualifying
WEATHER Friday - Cloudy with top temp of 21°c Saturday - Cloudy with top temp of 21°c Sunday - Cloudy with top temp of 23°c. 10% chance of rain.
Already time for a trip to the Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve! One of my favorite stops on the F1 calendar, we've seen some great races over the years. Always hard on cars, this could be one were reliability comes into play. Doesn't look like rain, or overly hot conditions, so should just be a race of speed and attention. Look for both HAAS cars to be out with brake failures by lap 50. Lewis Hamilton comes into this race in need of a solid performance and win. Given the challenge from Ferrari this year, that doesn't look like an easy fait accompli, however he has won on 5 occasions here so certainly will give his all.
FUN FACTS!
Multiple Wins - M. Schumacher (7), L. Hamilton (5), N. Piquet (3) Multiple Poles - M. Schumacher (6), L. Hamilton (5), S. Vettel / A. Senna / N. Piquet (3) Fastest Laps - M. Schumacher / K. Raikkonen (4) Number of times in the points (Current Drivers) - K. Raikkonen (12), S. Vettel (8), F. Alonso / F. Massa (7), L. Hamilton (6), N. Hulkenberg / V. Bottas (3) Provided he makes it to the grid, Lance Stroll will become the 8th Canadian F1 driver to start a Canadian Grand Prix. Since 2006, only 3 times has the Candian GP winner gone on to win the WDC (Alonso 2006, Vettel 2013, Hamilton 2015) Both Hamilton and Ricciardo gained their first F1 win at this track. For a first time winner this year, you would have to look outside Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull, making it very unlikely. The Pole sitter has only won 3 times since 2007. (Hamilton 2007, 2010, 2015)

Thank you for creating the thread dogued computer problems on Monday and I just got around to getting everything back up last night. I think we may see the first real four car races this year in Montreal. Bottas loves this circuit, and Kimi is not going to be happy having his win handed over to his teammate. Fireworks for real.

Just checked the weather and it looks like we'll have a dry qualifying and likely a dry race too with temps in the 80s. 20 degrees warmer than last year when I was freezing my ass off.

No problem, figured everyone just had the week off Looking forward to this one, really hope Hamilton can take pole & win so we can look at knocking Schumacher off the top of records next year How many laps till Stroll joins the "Wall Of Champions" club?

I'm thinking here in Canada may see the first Merc 1-2 of the year. If they don't do it here then they're really the underdog. This Track is a power track but it also has some slow speed corners where the Mercedes seems to do well with that power and traction. The Ferrari won't struggle here though as they have a better top end and this track will allow Ferrari to claw back a lot of time on those long sections.
Like I said, this may wind up being "THE" race of the year.
Anyways... here's where they stand after six rounds in terms of PU component utilization.
ICE / TC / MGU-H / MGU-K / ES / CE Mercedes / Lewis Hamilton (2 2 2 2 2 2) Mercedes / Valtteri Bottas (2 2 2 2 2 2) Red Bull (Renault) / Daniel Ricciardo (2 2 2 2 1 2) Red Bull (Renault) / Max Verstappen (2 2 2 2 1 2) Ferrari / Sebastian Vettel (2 4 3 2 2 2) Ferrari / Kimi Räikkönen (2 3 2 2 2 2) Force India (Mercedes) / Sergio Pérez (1 1 1 1 1 1) Force India (Mercedes) Esteban Ocon (1 1 1 1 2 1) Williams (Mercedes) / Felipe Massa (1 1 1 1 2 1) Williams (Mercedes) / Lance Stroll (1 1 1 1 1 1) McLaren-Honda / Fernando Alonso (3 5 5 3 1 1) McLaren-Honda Stoffel Vandoorne (2 5 5 3 5 5) Toro Rosso (Renault) Daniil Kvyat (2 2 2 2 1 1) Toro Rosso (Renault) Carlos Sainz (2 2 3 3 2 2) Haas (Ferrari) / Romain Grosjean (2 3 2 2 2 2) Haas (Ferrari) Kevin Magnussen (2 2 2 2 2 2) Renault Nico Hülkenberg (2 2 2 2 2 2) Renault Jolyon Palmer (2 2 3 2 1 2) Sauber (Ferrari, 2016) / Marcus Ericsson (2 2 2 2 2 2) Sauber (Ferrari, 2016) / Pascal Wehrlein (2 2 2 2 2 3)
Engine elements: ICE = Internal Combustion Engine / TC = Turbo Charger / MGU-H = Motor Generator Unit - Heat / MGU-K = Motor Generator Unit - Kinetic / ES = Energy Store / CE = Control Electronics

I saw that list on a site... but I prefer mine in the "penalty" thread I am a little concerned about Ferrari's turbo holding out for the race as it appears to be the weakest part... if Vettel is pushing for the win and unable to keep full mode going, there is the worry that he'll either cook the turbo or wear it so much that he could be looking at penalties before the summer break.

Hamilton absolutely smashed the shit out of that lap, that was insane. 3 tenths faster than Vettel and 7 tenths faster than Bottas... crazy. I told someone a few days ago that I bet Hamilton will comfortably beat Bottas in qualifying because Hamilton is by far the best driver on brakes. I didn't expect him to beat him by 7 tenths... more like 2-3 tenths. That must be soul destroying for Bottas, Vettel and Raikkonen! -------------------------------------------------- Sorry Palmer, but you had no excuses today. I'd be replacing you for the next race. Hi Kubica Sorry Stroll, but you have had more than enough chances. I'd be replacing you for the next race. Even with a slipstream given to you from Massa you still sucked Sorry Vandorme, sure you have a shitty engine in your car but you're being dominated by your teammates. I'd be replacing you for the next race. Well done Kvyat, keep up the good driving! Well done Verstappen, you were decently faster than Ric all weekend which is very impressive.

I have to say, my eyes got watery watching that display, Lewis receiving an actual race worn Senna helmet. Great to see that the family respects his efforts as much as he respects Ayrton's accomplishment. That was a great moment in the history of the sport.

I regret missing this great qualifying. Have no good excuse to miss it, I just didn't stay up and watch when I could've. Sigh
Congratulations Lewis, I missed a great moment in history.

There are videos all over the place, really did catch everyone by surprise, was a special, special moment. I've even seen a Ferrari fan or two nodding in agreement. Not some though, just a lot of hatred. Moving on to tomorrow, it's probably going to be the race of the year.
There's going to be a lot wall kissing, wind is supposed to pick up tomorrow.

Are non champions allowed to hit the Wall of Champions? I'm guessing there will be two... maybe three safety cars today, making for a lot of attacking whomever is in the lead. Still contending this to be the race of the year, not much hype eh?

Agree, might see someone or two bin it in the wall of champions or the exit of turn 4, a Safety car is probable which could play a serious part for the contenders.
I'm with you WB, could be in for a cracker race. Unfortunately won't watch this live this year, 3.30am race start for me, gets harder every year to stay up or wake up to watch these North American races, I'll have to just settle with highlights for the next day.
Enjoy the race folks.
