Hmm...I now have a tiny inkling of hope that Redbull could just about bitchslap Ferrari this weekend, looking at FP1.

Definitely feel Red Bull could get another podium on merit, did have high hopes for Silverstone after the good pace shown at the A1-ring.

Now Bottas has a gearbox penalty.... what a joke. It's clockwork with Mercedes of late. Well, you play the cards you're dealt right? It's a far easier track to overtake on than Austria and Mercedes has a new updated ICE.

Mercedes look very strong this weekend, much stronger than Austria. I expect even with Bottas having a penalty that he will still get a podium, maybe even 2nd. Ferrari & Red Bull were unable to match Hamilton's pace. Hamilton on the softs was a tiny bit faster than Ferrari & Red Bull on the super softs...
Hamilton then messed up his supersoft run and lost 6-8 tenths in total, lost 6 tenths in sector 2 but would have also lost 2~ tenths in sector 3. If Ferrari & Red Bull don't step it up in practice coming up then Hamilton should be plenty fast enough to slow up Ferrari/Red Bull to let Bottas overtake just like how he could have done last year at Abu Dhabi where he had such a big pace difference he could go slow for most of the track and then just speed off down the straight so he didn't get overtaken.
EDIT: Phew, Ferrari were sandbagging. It was starting to look like Mercedes were over a second faster!

They have new PU components, Kimi has a new Turbo and both Vettel and Kimi have new ICE, so no one was fully turning up with wick Friday. EDIT: Sounds like wet qualifying, Q1 at least.

My gosh, 0.5 faster than Ferrari, 0.7 faster than Bottas.
Hamilton is under investigation for blocking Grosjean... this could end badly. I hope it doesn't because that was a stonker of a lap.

"I think it was the best way I could prepare for this weekend"
Who can doubt Hamilton with a lap like that?

What a lap! Stunning! And brings the pole time, close to my guess.... which I d decided was way too fast.
I think Lewis s is cleared.
Now to work out pool picks.
That was a GREAT Quali session! Brill that Kimi beat Vettel!
Why was Button even sticking his nose in! He was always crap at Silverstone!

Why was Button even sticking his nose in! He was always crap at Silverstone! Give the guy a break it was strictly marketing for McLaren. I mean how else is a McLaren driver going to get anywhere near the top three qualifiers?

Wolff defends Hamilton from 'unfair' criticismWolff said the driver -- who is 20 points behind Vettel after nine races -- had discussed everything with him and acted with full permission. "We had a chat at the beginning of the week whether it was good or not good to go to the event," he said. "After five years together I think the most important is that he feels at ease because that is how he extracts performance on race weekends. "Questioning whether a three-time world champion, that has just broken Ayrton Senna's pole record and is going to beat Schumacher's record, understands how he should prepare himself is an insult. "I give him freedom to organise his days in a way he wants. If he feels that staying away from a Formula One environment, being with his friends...helps him to extract performance in Silverstone then so be it." Wolff said there had never been an issue within the team, and the driver was 'in a great place' even if he polarised opinion. Hamilton, whose pole left him one off Michael Schumacher's all-time record of 68, jetted off to the Greek island of Mykonos with friends during the London event. Chasing a record-equalling fifth British Grand Prix victory, and fourth in a row at Silverstone, he has enjoyed his annual love-in with the home fans. Wolff suggested Red Bull boss Christian Horner had been up to "a bit of mischief" in highlighting Hamilton's absence at the London event, heard few boos and saw no backlash ahead of Sunday's race. "He took a decision for his championship and the way he's been treated in certain media is wrong," said Wolff. "And not fair. "Before his home race at Silverstone, after rough weekends in Austria and Baku, to be treating the local superstar and hero in that way is absolutely against how I see things." _______________________________________________________________________________
