Have I said how much I hate the summer break? So let's keep our F1 brains going and not all just wander away for the month. Some hypothetical scenarios. Add you own, what COULD have happened in F1 if.....
What if..... in 1994 Damon Hill wasn't taken out of the race by Michael Schumacher and had gone on to win the 1994 WDC? Hill would have entered 1995 without the monkey on his back, and been less about revenge and more about racing. The number of incidents he was involved in could have been reduced, resulting in wins in Britain and Canada at the very least, and we may have seen back-to-back championships. Follow that up with his actual win in 1996, would Williams have been so keen to dump a triple world champion, or would he have stayed to gain the 1997 title? Maybe a move to McLaren at the end of that season to replace Mika Hakkinen who had at that point spent 7 seasons in F1 (5 with McLaren) only registering 1 win at the end of '97. A dominant McLaren in '97 & '98, and we may well be looking back at the "golden" era of Hill's 6 consecutive WDC titles.

I was thinking about it earlier, then saw an article on ESPNF1 about What If Kubica Hadn't Been Injured?. For those who can't be bothered reading it... it follows different timeline options that may well have resulted in Kubica being at Mercedes, Hamilton at Ferrari and Vettel still at Red Bull.

I was in the middle of having children in that era. The entirety of the mid 90's is a blur and I didn't pick up F1 again until after the Ferrari run.

I taught my daughter from the day I brought her home, that F1 was a great thing to watch! I did a lot of midnight feeds with her watching races She liked the silver cars Now she likes the pink cars But we both agree the red cars were bad

What if.... Felipe Massa hadn't left the pits when the red light was on in Canada 2007, and instead had finished 2nd to Hamilton? By the end of the Monza race, the points table would have had Massa ahead of Kimi. Would Ferrari have made the call then to make him #1, and ordered Kimi to swap places in Spa? Doing so would mean that by the time the Brazilian GP came around, Hamilton would have been on 107, Alonso 102, Kimi 97, Massa 96. No matter what the Ferrari's did, the WDC title would have gone to one of the McLaren pair. If results stayed the same, Lewis would have won the WDC by 1 point from Alonso, with Kimi in 3rd. If they didn't swap at Spa, if would have been a 3 way tie for 1st place, with the title going to Kimi by virtue of his 6 wins.

^^ Reading that made me laugh out loud. One could go on an on with scenarios like that because the entirety of life is about the decisions we make when being in a certain place at a certain time! Sorry of letting myself get too deep, just a little introspective today is all.

That's the point Didn't the great and Powerful Murray Walker always say "F1 is IF backwards!" That split second, that small change, that twist of fate. IF Senna hadn't been killed in that race, would Coulthard have ever made it to F1? IF Hamilton had signed with Williams during his "break" with McLaren in 2004, would he have been able to shine enough to get a better drive, or would the car have let him down so he became the perennial mid field driver; the Hulk or Heidfeld of the last 10 years as it were.
