www.formula1.com/en/latest/headlines/2018/2/formula-1-to-launch-f1-tv-a-live-grand-prix-subscription-service.htmlIt's not the way I would have gone personally but it's close, I would have offered several cheaper live options with all the cheaper options having commercials in-between sessions and also provide a fully free option that is of lower quality stream supported by advertising to try and get some new fans. I would have also offered one slightly more expensive option, providing the ability to stream in 4k (device & network dependant) and provide these users with some extra features like ability to live pause/rewind among other things. Either way, I'm sure they'll get some takers. It's ceartinly cheaper than Sky! Sky: £189 + £240 (£220~ cheaper)Now TV: £230 (£130 Cheaper)

my understanidng was that it is region locked for the time being. For example, they can't launch it in the UK till the current sky contract ends.

Tata last year was supposed to be trialing out 4k at circuits. I'll wait to see the USA based pricing, but solely for the lack of commercials during a race, I'd consider it. We get about 22 minutes of racing per half hour, that's a lot of stuff that's lost to commercial breaks. The reasons NBCSports didn't renew their contract was due to the fact that they'd be competing with the streaming service. The TV audience here is tenuous as is. For ESPN it made sense, it was cheap to produce, they're essentially just airing Sky's program and they're hurting for cash and content, this was as good a solution as they could get. I'll take a wait an see approach. BTW, I'm so glad they'll be broadcasting speeds in MPH now because it's so difficult to keep track of KPH. Catering to the lowest common denominator will be the downfall of humanity.

Yep, but you should be able to use VPN's if you want to access it in the UK (whilst the Sky contract is still around), after the existing contracts expire F1 should unlock it to the rest of the world.

You really think VPN access being blocked is going to do jack shit? Netflix and Pandora have been trying to block VPN's for years, it doesn't work. VPN providers just find ways around it. Plus you can setup private VPN's with friends/randoms online if you're smart

Whilest I'm sure that many fans will have no issue getting around it, was just pointing out that it's a rolling release. The UK and other "locked" areas will be included once current contracts expire.
As for getting around blocks, as you said it isn't that hard. Not as easy as getting around the Australian ISP "block" for torrent sites (basically change your DNS server to google), but I don't doubt there will be mirrors up before long anyway! Just as you can stream every session if you look hard enough right now.

ESPN made a joke of the first race in the US. I actually had high hopes because the previous evening they showed all three qualifying session without any commercial interruptions only airing commercials between the three sessrions. They even stayed through the red light portion of Q3. Here I was thinking, OMG maybe we're going to get the same treatment for the races? Too good to be true.
It was.
Not only did they go to the usual commercial breaks but since the coverage is the SKY feed with their commentators, they go into a commercial break without any regard for what's going on in the race at the moment. Sometimes they'd go to a commercial mid sentence. Or at the worst moment, and then pick up coverage again mid sentence without showing us what transpired before the break if there was something of importance.
It's a bad joke. It looks like I'll have to spring for the F1 TV as soon as it's available.
