Going to digress from the topic a little now and expand on my views of drivers.
Agreed Wß that Max is right up there with his instinctive ability to know where to put the car. He’s the only one at the moment that really excites me to watch him other than Hamilton.
On his maturity. He is actually still very young. And he hasn’t had many years yet in F1. He makes errors, so do they all at that stage. But he gets results. He’s up there.
I remember when Lewis first started, like Max, complete confidence in his driving ability, but unlike Max lacked confidence in himself as a person. He worried what others thought of him, he wanted to please everyone and allowed himself to get pulled in all directions. Okay, he had things to deal with that Max hasn’t, like the underlying racism , the criticism from ex drivers, particularly British ones, and the vilification in the British press. All that took its toll on him. I get the feeling it would have been water off a ducks back if it had happened to Max. Remember how affected Lewis was when the team asked him to lie? In tears, considering leaving the sport. I imagine in a similar situation Max would just shrug, say sonethin* like ‘talk to my team’ and walk off. End of incident.
But Lewis has changed. I think he’s driving better than he ever has. He’s comfortable with himself, doesn’t have to please anyone. He’s now his own person and doesn’t need that confirming from outside. It seems to have unleashedd a higher level of performance in him. He also knows when to push, when to fight, when to settle for a good haul of points. Perhaps this comes with being in title fights.
Max doesn’t have these demons to contend with. He’s a different animal. Supremely confident in his driving and himself.
Perhaps he does need to learn some patience, but he’s only just 21 and he hasn’t been in a title fight yet. I think that will come when it’s required.
Of the other two drivers we mentioned Gasly and Leclerc, hard to say as yet how they will perform under pressure. And both will be under pressure and scrutiny next year so perhaps we’ll find out. I get the feeling that Leclerc may be slightly mentally stronger than Gasly but that’s just an impression from interviews, I’ve no evidence.
So there we have it. My driver analysis in brief. Lol
