Sounded like a reasonable plan. You can never trust technology! You can, you can trust it too screw you over at every given opportunity

You can, you can trust it too screw you over at every given opportunity A bad worker blames his or her tools... Says the guy who's never been at sea in a storm and the GPS has packed up On a serious note though, about 6 years ago a I was bringing a yacht back from Holland to Scarborough when all the electrics went out GPS, Chart plotter, Radio, Navigation lights everything. Now that in its self wasn't a problem (I knew my position and have an emergency radio), the problem was that it was blowing force 10 right from the direction I was trying to sail and it was in the middle of the night and pitch black. So I decided to go into Lowestoft for the night and fix the problem whilst the weather blew over Now Lowestoft has some shifting sand banks on the approach to the harbour and the newest chart I had was over 6 years old, I couldn't be totally sure how deep the water was on my approach so I radioed the coast guard for a transit to sail to be told that they couldn't give me any navigation aid as if I went aground using their advise I could possibly sue them ! All they could do would be to send out the offshore lifeboat to escort me in (risking several other lives) how fucked up is that ! Luckily I managed to spot a channel marker and made my way in slowly , moral of my tail is if your life might depend upon it never trust technology

Could you use a sextant and compass to navigate? I gotta say that night time out in the ocean, there is no deeper darkness. I'm not cut out of that.

I'd have been very scared in that situation!

I can use a sextant but only to get a rough position when there's no land in sight, I'm way to slow to get an accurate fix I was just navigating by compass I could get several bearings from lights and landmarks to accurately know where I was, and I knew it wasn't just a straight run in to the harbour, I knew where the channel used to be but not how much it had changed position I jut had to hope for finding it, if I couldn't find it I would have probably just stayed out at sea Ichabod, were you scared? I'd have been very scared in that situation! No I wasn't scared (I like to pretend I'm all manly and tough) the boat was still perfectly seaworthy and safe it was more risky trying to get into the harbour without an up to date chart but I was tired and uncomfortable, if I couldn't find the channel it would have been a long night keeping watch

But weren't you worried with the storm that you'd get blown the wrong way, and because it was dark and all the instruments weren't working, you wouldn't know where you were?

No I honestly would be more scared standing at the top of a black ski run I had a compass and a paper chart so I knew where I was

Haha Ichabod yeah that is fair enough, it's a little different for a situation like that but I take your point, however I'm the sort of person who has a backup for things especially essentials like gps at sea.

I think I must have mentioned wine a tad too often on Twitter. I seem to have aquired a following of wine merchants and wine producers. Lots of them!

Today I noticed that a girl on my whatsapp has changed her profile picture to a picture of her boyfriend who has taken a naked selfie in the mirror... luckily his junk is covered by a very very low towel.

Installed the headliner on my car over the last couple of days. Not a job to be taken lightly but it's done and I am pleased with the results. I'll post some pics later. Today the car goes back to the shop for a final assembly push.
