March 2013…A month I shall always memorise for the good and of course, the bad.
But it was then where I discovered that Metal Gear Solid 5 would be split into two parts. Ground Zeroes and The Phantom Pain but little did I know they would be sold separately. To add to this, little did I know I would have to wait a year and a half after Ground Zeroes came out to play The Phantom Pain and with just over a week to go until The Phantom Pain comes out, I can reflect on what I am anticipating. Trailer after trailer, game footage after game footage, I have watched and learnt how more exciting this game is. Usually, I’d never wish to see the end of summer but this year is different. I don’t care anymore about this summer because of one thing. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.
I am yet to play the game, as stated but with each day drawing closer to its release, I can feel the movement from my character, Big Boss on the controller. I can’t wait. Not only is it my first Metal Gear game on my PS4 and a game I will spend hours on but this will also integrate the first open world style to a Metal Gear game, a feature long overdue. In fact, long overdue since 2004 when Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater was due to implement this feature but the failure to this did not stop that game from being one of the best in the series’ history. Now, I can say without doubt that this game may possibly be the game of the year. As I am writing this, I am watching trailers for Metal Gear and one trailer I’d advise everyone to watch, even if you’re not connected with the series, is the E3 2013 trailer. This early version of the cutscenes in the game gives an impressive idea of what this game will feature both cinematically and gameplay. You get to see how sinister and dangerous this game will be, concluded with taboo themes such as child soldiers and torture. But I don’t love this game for its hardcore themes, I love this game because it is Metal Gear. It is a franchise that I love and though a few may see a bias side to this game, I disagree. For a game that I love, of course I imagined high expectations. But watching these trailers blew my mind greater than I could imagine. Brief instances in the cutscenes and mechanics in the game just clench onto your heartstrings and whispers how amazed you should feel to be a nerd or gamer or whatever you want to associate me as, I am a bit of both anyways.
The soundtrack is beautiful. Listening to Sins of the Father, even partial, is just amazing. Not only is the song amazing to listen to in general, but it helps you build a connection with the characters if you know the story leading into this game. Just watching gameplay footage, it just feels amazing to witness and it will feel ten times greater once played. Just seeing Big Boss ready his horse and then gallop into the wastelands in Afghanistan is incredible. Not only that, but the real time weather gives you more of a challenge than this game has ever given to players familiar with this game. Even if you are a fan of this franchise or not, you need to get it as reports from boot camp have revealed how exciting and immense this storyline is. As a writer, I want to create an audio drama and a few of these elements that is seen in the trailer is a must for incorporation into that drama, just because of how powerful it is to me. I think by what the trailer depicts, the story to it will be interesting but then again, when has a Metal Gear story been famous for the boring storyline? This storyline is going to be important for a lot of factors. Not only does this game fill in the circle of the Metal Gear timeline, being the last of the series but we finally see Big Boss become the villain he is in Metal Gear, we're finally going to see him snap and I can't wait. Watching every single trailer has me prepared for the best and I can watch them all day long, I am never tired from the amazing footage we're getting and after teasing so much, we'll finally see the reasoning behind Big Boss being in a nine year coma.
The game itself is going to be long filled with the main missions and side missions to occupy your time. You have to have a lot of patience and practice with this game (Don’t worry, you could buy Ground Zeroes within the 9 days waiting for this game, the main mission is five minutes long if you quick run it…no, that isn’t a joke). The gameplay length for a mission could take up to an hour due to how you have to sneak into situations where you may have to rescue or retrieve imperative items. One trusted source who does news reports on Metal Gear Solid V claims that he spent 8 hours playing the game and only could complete 5%. Don’t let the small percentage fool you, this man is an artistic gamer and doesn’t fail at this franchise (yes DSPGaming, I am looking at you and your stupidity). The game has been designed so fans can enjoy hours upon hours on playing and be far from achieving the nearing to the finale. It isn’t just that however, it is also the opposition’s A.I that is opening eyes for people. Usually a gamer will encounter a repetitive A.I who you can continue to overcome by ease the more you practice. Not this game however, the A.I will LEARN your patterns of attack and will develop to defend themselves better. Say if you’re trying to shoot someone with a tranq gun, the next time you play that mission, they will have head protection and that is just the beginning of their enhancements. This gives me a far greater smile when I learn that A.I’s will be intelligent. On a second, third or maybe fourth runthrough, I will still be clueless as I was on day one to the pattern’s of the enemy and their patterns shift also with the day and night cycle as enemies will have different patrols. Tackling the enemy aspect will be a highlight for me.
There is a bible full of features that have me hyped so I could go on but I don’t want to exactly pull a successful version of breaking the internet, hello Kim Kardashian. It may be sad that the most exciting thing I am waiting for is to play this game and man, how much it will kill whilst I am sat in college, twiddling my thumbs, eager to play this. I can only picture the wait is going to kill me, literally. It’s not just the story’s missions that get me excited. You can literally operate around your own Mother Base which you could not do in Peace Walker where you can only observe it. If you don’t know what I am talking about, imagine a playable main menu but the ability to interact with fellow comrades with little fun activities as well as the ability to do every day stuff like take a shower if flies are buzzing around you. These little implements make this game stand out so much because it’s down to hard work that has contributed to the creation of this game.
I am not sure how this game will end or how long it will take me to complete it. Bear in mind, I have college on top of my problems as well as making YouTube videos and seeing my girlfriend to fit into my weekly regime and this game is supposed to have hundreds of hours content for me to play so it may be 2017 before I am fully complete with this. I am known to procrastinate on games especially if they have a free roam feature, which MGSV does, in the game and it isn’t just that, outside your missions, your Mother Base acts like a mini-game. You have to keep a management on your Mother Base financially and you have to maintain your comrade’s attitude against others or things will turn ugly which is amazing. As one of the boss’ for your base, you have to keep your guys happy. An online feature I am eager for is the FOB or Forward Operation Bases. This allows you to set up bases away from the storyline’s Mother Base and the purpose for this is to expand overseas. It also allows other online players to invade your base, wreck your base and steal items and you can defend your base from that online player. I can’t tell you how much I am awaiting trolling the hell out of my best friend by invading his base, fully knowing that he will strike revenge, which is an important theme of this game, right back at me. Kiefer Sutherland, known for playing Jack Bauer in 24, will be the hero descending into a demon, replacing David Hayter and at first, I was a bit upset with the choice but hearing a few of his lines in The Phantom Pain’s previews and of course, Ground Zeroes, I just have a high amount of hype for his performance. He is a gifted actor and has taken the time to play this big icon in the gaming world. Even though it has been said his vocal roles are small (due to how Kojima wants Big Boss’ body language to be read from facial detection rather than words), he is a known actor and will have a massive impact in the community by the end of the game. The Buddy system is going to be an amazing feature too where you get to select a companion A.I to aid you on your adventures. So far, you can choose a Horse, D.D (A wolf who is freaking cute as a pup, OH MY GOD), Quiet, the semi-nude professional sniper and D-Walker, a mechanical weapon you can use to get around areas nosily but easier. You can recruit people and things to your Mother Base and what I mean is you can recruit fellow soldiers to be a part of your Diamond Dogs army and not only that. You can extract items such as vehicles, containers, anything to make your Mother Base a bigger threat to the world and I am not kidding when I say this, you can even extract animals…yes…animals. Animals like Goats…Yes, I am serious but also Bears too and from what I’ve read, these bears are freaking lethal to take out. Speaking about stuff being freaking lethal, one type of enemy in the game confirmed is a group of super soldiers called The Skulls and how they originate from is unknown as of this point but they are in allegiance with the main enemy of the game, Skullface. Apparently they’ll randomly appear and from what I’ve heard, taking them out is going to be like finding a needle in a haystack. The way they move, as seen in the E3 2015 Trailer is eerie and if this is going to be a constant cycle for me, I am going to hide behind something. People have often brought up how creepy they are and after playing P.T (Another little game that was supposed to be based on a new Silent Hills title by Kojima), I am not a massive fan for ‘creepy’ moments in games because I am not a fan of buying new pants for myself. There are so many features but those mentioned are moments I can’t wait to experience.
Yesterday, I was practicing my skills on Ground Zeroes in preparation for this game and I tried different areas to sneak into Camp Omega as The Phantom Pain will allow you to enter territories in various angles. This fed on my hunger for this game and I can say when I finally open the casing for this game, my life will have a new direction in terms of entertainment. This is the final Metal Gear title under Hideo Kojima and he has guaranteed that this game will be something amazing and I know Kojima is going to go out with a bang. Without the exposure of the ending, many people have teased the ending will have a big head scratching moment, which is the norm for me. After watching shows like Doctor Who, Arrow, Game of Thrones and The Flash, I am used to this. On September 1st 2015, Phantoms will breed Destruction and this will be the Game of the Year. If Fallout 4 does beat this game, you could say…I will be…NUCLEEAAAR. Be sure to get this game as soon as you can, a fan or not because I assure you, it is going to be amazing for a lot of people once they get their hands on this game. The wait is killing me.
