NYTimes -Russia’s determination to use state-sponsored doping to dominate the medal haul at recent Olympic Games, as outlined by investigators, did not end there. The country wanted success at the Paralympics, too, and several of its athletes took banned substances to gain an advantage over other disabled competitors.

Now, just as Russia faces the possibility of being barred from the coming Rio de Janeiro Olympics because of doping violations, the country’s Paralympic team has been told it is not welcome at this summer’s Paralympics.

Officials for the Paralympics, the global showcase for disabled athletes that will be held in Rio two weeks after the Summer Olympics conclude, said on Friday that the organization had moved to bar Russia for doping, an unprecedented sanction in the history of disabled-athlete sports.

An investigation into claims of an elaborate doping program by Russia’s former antidoping lab director found that at least 35 drug violations among Russian Paralympians had been covered up by the country’s sports ministry since 2011. An additional 19 doping samples from the last Paralympics, in Sochi in 2014, were tampered with, according to Paralympic officials, who received the names of the implicated Russian athletes on Thursday.

Hours before the announcement, the International Olympic Committee said it had identified 45 more Olympians — from unspecified nations — who tested positive for banned substances at the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2012 London Games. More than half of them were medalists, further establishing that many performances at recent Olympic Games were fraudulent.

The news on Friday intensified pressure on Olympic officials to react strongly to the doping crisis emanating from Russia. Olympic executives are expected to convene Sunday to discuss penalties against Russia ahead of the Rio Games. Antidoping advocates have requested that the I.O.C. take action similar to what Paralympic officials, who typically act in lock step with Olympic officials, initiated on Friday.
