The official thread, perfectly timed while F1 is on hiatus and all the Brexiting has died down! Little bit of personal info, my daughter swam against this girl back in the day when she did club swimming. The area I live in is actually pretty heavy with USA swimming caliber competition and the YMCAs are extremely competitive. She's been out of it for many years now but I went back and looked at some heat sheets and there she was as a 14 year old. I've seen a couple of local kids from the area make it as far as the finals but never actually making it to the team. Unlike other sports, ONLY the top two athletes in an event make the team, so it's a supremely difficult achievement even if you're one of the top ten swimmers int he country in your event/s you'd still pretty much an unknown. Brutal sport but supremely beautiful to watch. Hali FlickingerAnyone know about a local talent in their country?

For those of you not having switched gears into the Olympic spirit yet, WADA recommends the IOC ban all Russian athletes from the games. I feel horrible for the handful of Russian athletes that are clean such as Yelena Isinbayeva

I'm not sure if this advert for the para olympics is just a UK advert or not? I think it might be, so I'll post it. I think it's awesome. Gives me goose bumps watching it. It's called the Superhumans. Incredible!!

It's sick how people cheat, or even worse are made to cheat. Like you WB , my kid , max swam with guys who went on to the Olympics, so I perhaps know more about the swimming than other disciplines. Sharon Davis, swimmer from a long while ago, often commentates now, won a silver, the gold winner doped, so Sharon should have had that gold. That must have happened to so many people. So unfair.

Olympics have started! Russian dopers allowed to take part! Wonder who else dopes? Still love to watch it, especially certain events but the corruption, like in everything these days, pervades it. Such a shame.

I enjoyed the opening ceremonies. I usually think these things are overdone self aggrandizing but they kept it simple, moving and the music was fantastic.

I didn't actually watch it....I sunbathed. I loved the London opening ceremony, so can imagine it was good. Always the dilemma about amount spent and amount of poor in country needing help.

Wow! Didn't see that, will watch out for him! Knew he was expected to do well. It was his own world record but he smashed it by over half a second. And that was in the heat. Not sure when the final is but it'll be good. Britain could get silver in that too. We have another guy called Murdoch who is good.
When he broke the record his first 50m split was 26.? that's incredible!!

Tried to stay up last night to watch the final 2.50 UK time, so 3.50 here. Got too tired. BBC said don't worry if you don't stay up , keep off social media and we'll show it in the morning. Put tele on and there's the Olypic news saying Peaty has the gold. Which is great news!!! But Grrrrrrr BBC! New world record 57.55, said he took the first 50 easy then gave it everything he's got. You can see the swim in this link. ( actually maybe you can't ) www.bbc.com/sport/olympics/36685693Got a silver too by the Welsh girl Jazz Carlin in the 400 free

I know Michael Phelps and all but Katie Ledecky is the most dominant swimmer in the sport today.

Little GB is doing rather well in the medals. Particularly in watery things and bikes. The bike success has particularly irritated cyclists from France, Germany and Australia who have been beaten, so they've issued thinly veiled comments to suggest Uk cyclists must be cheating. Here are some of the comments........ Anna Mears, Australia- “The British are just phenomenal when it comes to the Olympic Games, and we’re all just scratching our heads going: ‘How do they lift so much when in so many events they have not even been in contention in the world championships" kristina Vogel, Germany- “I don’t want to accuse anyone of anything, but it’s certainly questionable. They come en masse at this high level and I have no idea how they do it.” MIchael D'Almeida , France - "We are human beings like them, we are made of the same stuff, we have a bike like they do, so why are they better? ( i particularly like this comment )LAurent Gané, French coach: “The recipe should be asked for from our neighbours because I don’t understand. I don’t know what they’re doing. “These are teams that do nothing extraordinary for four years and once they arrive at the Olympics they out-class the rest of the world,” The following link has medal tables in it and success in the last three Olympics for British cyclists. It also has some tweets from the sore losers and some replies from Brits. www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/team-gb-cheating-accusations_uk_57b4264ee4b0edf5a373c956Here's the Guardian report if it with a rely from the British coach. He says they have phenomenal athletes, they are better funded than the cyclists from the complaining countries, they pay attention to every last detail in their preparation and they they train specifically to peak every four years for the Olympics. It's all about being in perfect condition for the Olymoics www.theguardian.com/sport/2016/aug/16/british-cycling-head-coach-hits-back-rivals
