Can someone explain it please? There were some comments about it before at the . Here up north we don't have many motorways with more than 2 lanes but my drive down to Silverstone was mostly on 3 lanes. I was doing a little over 70 most of the way so passing a lot of lorries and slower drivers, if I did pull over to the left lane I just ended up getting boxed in and having to slow down and wait before I could pull out to overtake something doing 60 or less, so it was only if there was a decent clear stretch in the left lane .I would pull into it But for anyone wanting to pass me at 80+ there's another lane beyond the middle to do that, what's the problem?

If there are two lanes the right is the slow lane and the left is for overtaking. If there are three lanes the right is for slow traffic, the middle is for cruising and the left is for overtaking.
*Disclaimer take everything I just said and flip it for the UK and Japan.

Aside from you guys driving on the wrong side, I think there may be some disagreement from some other UK drivers here. I think even our highway code will disagree with that in that unless you're overtaking then you must keep to the left-hand lane.

Yep. Middle and fast lanes are for overtaking. Middle lane hogging is sooooo annoying. I usually make a play of coming up to them in the slow lane , pulling out behind them, then into the fast lane to get past them, then straight back across to the slow lane. The odd one gets the message, most are oblivious.
The only time I stay out in the middle lane is if there's a convoy of lorries.
Stoney I'm amazed you could get up to 70mph on the M1 with all the 50 mile average speed cameras for roadworks.

I came down the M6, there were a few roadworks with 50 limit too. But like I said, there were lorries and other slower drivers in the left but whenever I did pull in I ended up boxed in and having to slow down so spent most of my time in the middle unless there were big gaps to traffic ahead in the left.

Yeah if it's busy you end up having to stay in the middle lane more.

In my 33 years of driving I've never seen anyone get pulled over for hogging the left lane. Speed traps are the only thing the popo are looking for. So the middle lane? I wish we had it so good.

Yeah drivers have been done for it, I'm not sure of the exact circumstances though as it might be a matter of interpretation as to what constitutes a busy slow lane.
Here's someone going slow in the fast lane but then goes and makes things worse for him/her self. (NSFW)

Oh I've come across a few of those a$$holes brake testing me just because I flash (headlights) em to get out of the way.
What I end up doing is overtaking using the middle, get ahead and brake in front of them (while using middle lane traffic to my advantage) for about a km or so and then go ahead on my way. Unless I'm in a hurry and have no time to play games.
The attitude here is generally okay on the highway, but there are twits you come up to who just hog the fast lane with the mentality of "this is the speed limit, if you want to go faster....too bad".

If you hog the middle lane in the UK you could be fined £100 on the spot and have points on your license. ( I don't think it's a common occurrence to be fined for this, I didn't know there was such a fine). But if someone hogs the middle lane in light traffic it makes the inside lane practically useless, it's also inconfpsiderate and very annoying. Interesting article I found on why you shouldn't hog the middle lane. www.bbc.com/news/magazine-22784983Some bits from it.... Part 264 of the Highway Code says: "You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past." AA president Edmund King says there's a very simple reason why lane-hogging is wrong. "It causes congestion." There are cultural differences. In France anyone dawdling in the overtaking lane will soon be flashed or tailgated. Neither is lane-hogging common in Germany, says Liu. Congestion is not the only factor. Lane hogging makes other drivers angry and forces them to weave in and out of the traffic, says motoring journalist Quentin Willson. You take umbrage because you know they're muppets who don't understand how the motorway works," Willson says. There is a "grammar" to driving on the motorway. You stay left, overtake where necessary and then move into the left-hand lane. That's what the Highway Code says - it's a way of allowing the traffic to travel at the optimum speed.

I undertake any middle lane fuckers that cross my path!!*
*I think if there are lorries and slow moving vehicles on the inside lane, then I have no problems with people sitting in the middle lane - its hard to judge whats reasonable though. Maybe 5 lorries length?!

In the most basic of ways, all you want is to have each whether middle or overtaking be faster than the next. 55, 65, 75 and always keep an eye out for overtaking traffic and move out of their way before they get to within five or six car lengths of you.
Utopia.

My brother drove recently along the M25, M2 and a few other big roads and the most annoying things for me/us was:
1) People moving in and out of lanes far too much. 2) People moving lanes during congestion. 3) People who stick to the bumper of the car in front during congestion, just all go slow at a set speed to keep a roll going, don't close the gap to the car in front and then have to brake... if everyone did this there wouldn't be much congestion on any roads... 4) People who come off the sliproad and go pretty much straight out to the fast lane. 5) People moving lane fast, be gentle with your steering. 6) People who try and skip the cue of cars and push their way in later up the road for a turn-off. 7) People going well over 75 in the fast lane (i'm on about the people doing 80-90 mainly, if we're out in the fast lane going 70-75, don't come flying up behind us and sit right on our bumper to try and make us move in.)
I don't know if any of you are on the bad/opposiste side to any of these

I particularly agree with your point 6. I hate those queue pusher ins. I get rammed up to the car in front to stop them getting in in front of me.
But on point 7, I frequently go at 80 in the fast lane, particularly when overtaking a train of several cars going just that bit too slow for the speed I want to go at. I'm not impressed when I come up to someone in the fast lane going the same speed as the middle lane and won't move over. You'd be slaughtered doing that on the French motorway.

Well if you dont want me flying up your arse, get our of my fucking way!!!!!! Im a fucking Mercedes driver dont you know. This lane was built for ME!! Not you shitty Citroen drivers.....

Lol I gotta agree with this one. Point 7 was exactly my complaint in my post! Some of us just feel like we're going at 75 when we're doing 90-100, Ryry. It's just....the build quality n all that.

Some of us get up to 130ish.
EDIT: before I take too much slack, it's usually at 6:30 am on a Sunday as I head out to an event, it's still somewhat dark and I'm the only car on the road. When I overtake someone I do so at the "legal" limit.

On the way to work, If I go via the motorway, I average 90-100. But I have the odd blip up to 125.
I MUST change my car to a slower car.
