Will be doing one on the cheap...
I have a MOMO seat that I've taken out of my Porsche to use as the seat, I have an old IKEA desk that my son no longer uses, when you shorted the legs it is the perfect height and is has a space for a PC that I can use to hold the gaming unit. I plan to use PVC tubing since it's easy for me to work with that and make a frame and then use muffler clamps to bolt on the required stuff, pedals, wheel, shifter etc. So far so good. Budget here about $50 dollars in materials
What I'm completely open to recommendation on is the hardware. So far, leaning towards a
50" 4K TV $400 Console $350 Controls $300
Grand Total $1100
Xbox One, Thrustmaster controls. Looking for feedback or comments, I've decided to go the console route just for the sake of simplicity as I don't want to have to maintain another PC.

Don't have room either, got a DFGT on a wheel stand pro going to PS3 on a 42" passive 3d sony. drive.google.com/file/d/0B4tuUL8KZB7ULVhDZ1FqNkNpa00/view?usp=drivesdkIf you dont have room for a full seat setup i definitely recommend the wheelstand pro, solid and stable and folds away neatly with the wheel on it. I don't know if it's still the case but early 4k sets had terrible lag times, no problem for watching TV or movies but not good for gaming. My old Samsung was pretty poor, even on game mode, but the Sony's down at something like 8ms.

I've been reading up on that, a lot of the lag isn't on the actual pixel up but on the up conversion from a 1080p to 4k which they use processing for. In a native 4k console that goes away so the comments are that it works well. Essentially it's a tradeoff and the price on a monitor goes up exponentially with size.
I'll wait and pull the trigger on the screen last.

They say your eye can't really judge the quality of the screen when its by itself.
For example, if you just had a 1080 in front of you you'd think its awesome. Then you have 4K next to it, and you see the difference. So its worthwhile to just stick to the cheaper alternative since your level of enjoyment isn't affected. 1080p is a great TV already, the 4K and whatnot are basically USPs to sell more TVs.

^^ Until you watch a show shot with native 4k resolution. Let me tell you, it's fucking insane the detail. If you stick to 50" and under they are quite reasonable if not cheap. For some reason... maybe because this is America, the bigger the better and prices jump exponentially from there.
It's funny though since OLED has come onto the scene essentially at the same time, they have taken the top tier pricing wise and you can pick up a very highly rated 4k 48.5" TV for under $400.

It's funny though since OLED has come onto the scene essentially at the same time, they have taken the top tier pricing wise and you can pick up a very highly rated 4k 48.5" TV for under $400. The show shots are usually done using a high res player which brings out that detail you see....so you gotta make sure your graphics card is top spec (and 4k compliant) and whatever supporting electronics to be on par with the TV. For example, if you played a 4k TV using your current cable provider, it's a guarantee you'd be running the TV at 70-80% detail at best. Anyway that price is fking insane, I guess America is great in that regard. In Msia a 4K of the same size sets you back about RM4500. So without converting, imagine paying for 1 4K TV here....$4000x3. Huhuhuhu

Cable is a long way off from 4k. All of the 4k content is streaming on Amazon or Netflix but let me tell you, it is glorious.

I use 3x 24" 144hz monitors (all on a stand) with a G29 wheel on a PC
VR would make me feel really unwell lol
