Ok.. So I had a shit night, working till 3am with half of it soaked to the skin in 5 degrees. Got home and grabbed a replay of the race, not expecting much more than MAYBE a Vettel-Bottas/Kimi-Hamilton at best. Then I Watched The Race!
I got hopeful that Lewis making a podium was a cert when he was on Ultras. I got really hopeful when the rain came, as I knew if it didn't get too hard then the Ultras would enable Lewis to stay out.. so maybe 2nd. Then I heard the crowd cheering, and saw Seb kicking stones like an upset toddler And Wow. 14th - 1st
And the rest of the pack was a great race too. I REALLY hope this isn't the last German GP.

It would have been another Vettel driver of the day performance, up until this crash he controlled the race masterfully. It's remarkable how much difficulty he was put under by a bit of rain.
In the end I know both Vettel and Hamilton would have preferred to swap results each winning in their own home GP. At least they're tied as far as DNFs are concerned.

I should be a Steward... I pointed out two of the mitigating factors to rule against a penalty, their first point was already a given and obvious. Pretty much what I expected, if you look on social media and reddit all the Ferrari fans are going nuts saying how the FIA are inconsistent, how nothing ever happens to Hamilton and that it should have been a 10 second penalty (when at max, it should have been 5 second penalty). The way people should look at it, the team wanted Hamilton to pit in the confusion and never got that pit in so they had already received a penalty + the driver didn't gain any advantage at all and was more of a risk to his race than anyones because he could have easily got a puncture or damaged the wing / under side of the car.

I think Vettel panicked a bit when he knew how fast Lewis was closing. He isn’t as good in the wet as Lewis. Not sure Lewis would want to swap those results. Yes Lewis would LOVE to have won Silverstone. But he got a second. Don’t think he’d swap that for a dnf. Also he won from 14th in front of all Mercedes top brass. I think all considered Lewis will be very happy to take that.

So much salt from the peanut galleries over Lewis not getting a time penalty. I was curious, so here are all the pit entry/exit violations from 2012 - 2017. Pretty much settles the "stewards pet" argument! Season 2012Driver | Race | Allegation | Penalty | Session | Kamui Kobayashi | Great Britain | Crossed the pit entry line | No Action Taken | FP1 | Michael Schumacher | Mercedes | Did not enter pit lane via pit entry | No Action Taken | FP3 | Charles Pic | Japan | Crossed the pit entry line | No Action Taken | FP1 |
Season 2013Driver | Race | Allegation | Penalty | Session | Jules Bianchi | Australia | Crossed the pit entry line | No Action Taken | FP1 | Jenson Button | Canada | Crossed the pit entry line | No Action Taken | FP2 | Lewis Hamilton | Great Britain | Crossed the pit entry line | Reprimand | FP2 | Max Chilton | Brazil | Crossed the pit entry line | Reprimand | FP3 | Esteban Gutierrez | Brazil | Crossed the pit entry line | Reprimand | FP3 | Felipe Massa | Brazil | Crossed the pit entry line | Drive-Through Penalty | RACE |
*Note: A directive was issued prior to Brazil. Massa was warned prior to the penalty. Season 2014Driver | Race | Allegation | Penalty | Session | Kamui Kobayashi | Austria | Did not stay to the right of the pit lane entry line | No Action Taken | FP2 | Nico Hulkenberg | Austria | Did not stay to the right of the pit lane entry line | No Action Taken | FP2 | Kevin Magnussen | Austria | Did not stay to the right of the pit lane entry line | No Action Taken | FP2 | Adrian Sutil | Austria | Did not stay to the right of the pit lane entry line | No Action Taken | FP2 |
Season 2015Driver | Race | Allegation | Penalty | Session | Nico Rosberg | Spain | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP1 | Romain Grosjean | Canada | Crossed the white line at pit entry | No Action Taken | RACE | Will Stevens | Canada | Crossed the white line at pit entry | No Action Taken | RACE | Daniil Kvyat | Austria | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP1 | Sebastian Vettel | Austria | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP3 | Nico Hulkenberg | Austria | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP3 | Lewis Hamilton | Austria | Crossed the white line at pit exit | Five-Second Time Penalty | RACE | Valtteri Bottas | Russia | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP1 | Carlos Sainz Jr | Russia | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Five-Second Time Penalty | RACE | Nico Hulkenberg | Mexico | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP1 |
Season 2016Driver | Race | Allegation | Penalty | Session | Kimi Raikkonen | Europe | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Five-Second Time Penalty | RACE | Marcus Ericsson | Austria | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP1 | Valtteri Bottas | Hungary | Crossed the white line at pit entry and did not stay right of bollard | Reprimand | FP2 | Carlos Sainz Jr | Hungary | Crossed the white line at pit entry and did not stay right of bollard | Reprimand | FP2 | Sebastian Vettel | USA | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP2 |
*Note: Baku had a strict directive issued to drivers prior to FP1 due to the nature of the pit lane. Season 2017Driver | Race | Allegation | Penalty | Session | Pascal Wehrlein | Spain | Crossed the pit entry line | Five-Second Time Penalty | RACE | Sebastian Vettel | Monaco | Crossed the pit exit line | Reprimand | QUALI | Lance Stroll | Austria | Crossed the white line at pit entry | Reprimand | FP2 |
*Note: Wehrlein cut across INTO pit lane from the track after the bollard. While most have been FP sessions, it would still be a case of stewards looking at "risk" and any pre-existing directives. In the case of an unsafe breach in an FP session, they can issue grid drops and fines. All event notes have the note "In accordance with Chapter 4 (Section 4) of Appendix L to the ISC drivers must keep to the left of the white line at the pit entry." But, not ALL events clarify further with "When entering the pits drivers must keep to the left of the white line at the pit entry. Furthermore, any car with four wheels to the left of the white line must enter the pit lane." So there are tracks where the rules are enforced more than others. At the end of the day, Stewards are human and can make mistakes, but I think common sense was used here.

Nice one dogued ! I’ve seen the red mist descend in certain spheres about the unfairness of it all, and how its always Hamilton that gets off. And poor Ferrari drivers get such a hard time for taking out competitors while Hamilton gets off scot free for causing no damage to anyone. Did I say descend? It’s a permanent fog. Oh the blinkered fools of this world. Sent to entertain us.

Great work dogued the one with Raikkonen in Baku the stewards had specifically warned of the pit issues because of the high speed nature of section.

Could just be someone who saw it, not a forum member who posted it. It’s a cool post though. Shows to the ‘Wah, wah Hamilton’ gang that Hamilton is actually one of the few who has received a penalty for this.

Apparently it was first posted on f1technical and then reposted to Reddit.
