Over the past twenty years, F1 has given us nine world champions. Which one is your favourite? Here are a few negative and positive things that have been said about these champions to help you make your mi d up. You may have some more points to add to these. Please be respectful. Remember the driver you dislike may be someone else's favourite.
So here are some pros and cons that I've heard said about these drivers. I will add these aren't necessarily my own views. Starting with the most recent world champion
Lewis Hamilton
Positives
Won for two different teams
Can haul a result from an inferior car
Double world Champion
Instinctive / reactive car control
Negatives
Overly emotional
Easily distracted
Can't think a race/ manage tyres/ fuel
Relies too much on natural speed and talent
Fernando Alonso
Positives
Double world champion
Can haul a result from an inferior car
Relentless
Complete driver
Negatives
Only won for one team
Has insisted on number one status
Involved in too many dubious incidents
Beaten by a rookie
Sebastien Vettel
Positives
Four time world champion
Mastered the Newey blown off throttle diffuser (or some such device )
Good sense of humour
Good work ethic
Negatives
Only won in a dominant car
Can't easily adjust to a different handling car
Beaten by less experienced team mate
The finger
Jenson Button
Positives
When everything's right he can match top drivers
Seems a pleasant fellow
Good at gambling on weather conditions
Smooth driver
Negatives
Can't find set-up/ balance/ grip lots of times
Makes a lot of excuses
Only championship won in vastly superior car ( double diffuser)
Bit sneaky with team mates and team bosses
Kimi Raikkonen
Positives
Inherent speed
Popular due to irreverent monosyllabic replies to inane press questions.
Not overly demanding within a team
Highly amusing radio style
Negatives
Only just scraped one world championship (lost by McLaren rather than won by Kimi)
Goes missing in races sometimes
Beaten convincingly by Alonso
Doesn't always seem particularly bothered
Michael Schumacher
Positives
7 times world champion
Won for two different teams
Helped the resurgence of Ferrari
Good work ethic
Negatives
Cheating ( traction control/ Adelaide'94/ Jerez '97)
Hamstrung team mate
Unlimited testing
Taylor made tyres
I've tried to be fair and give four negatives and four positives for each driver. Feel free to add more. It's surprising how much easier some drivers were to give positives/ negatives for.
There are of course three more drivers Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Hakkinen and Damon Hill. But my fingers aching now! So maybe someone could add four positives and four negatives for them.
