Was watching an episode of Drive last week and the wife of Daimler Benz is credited for "inventing" the concept of the brake pad in the first place. Apparently the brake system on the test drive of the first Benz had steel on steel brakes that wore out in the first outing. To get back she had a cobbler line the brake with tough leather thereby the first brake pad.
