You're right, it originated from China. It's big in Malaysia too, I have a 19y old cousin who told me he has a 'girlfriend' he met on wechat and I'm like, cool when do I get to meet her...and he says "let me get to meet her first". DAFAQ? And apparently this is normal in his social circles, calling a stranger your 'girlfriend' and being in an actual relationship after seeing an online profile!!
Social media is an amazing tool IMO, but its being terribly abused. I guess its hard to control every persons intentions with these apps, but people are more likely to stare into a blank phone screen instead of another face in society today, something I find really sad (not pathetic sad, but crying face sad). If smartphones and these apps could be taken away in a blink of an eye tomorrow, and never come back....I'm all for it. Connections can still be kept with letters and emails, but I'd think a simple connection between two individuals would be a lot more real. And its this connection which is generally weakening thanks to the tech today which, I believe plays a major role in fidelity/infidelity today. We lose the basics in human connection.
For example....As a parent, you suffer more if your children go abroad to study since you can't see their face or speak to them....you survive on their letters. Or your boyfriend/girlfriend is abroad and you have very little to work with (no Skype, no FB, just plain letters or the occasional call) But through this suffering the bond gets stronger between the individuals. Couples value one another more, children value their parents absence (and vice versa) more. The connection gets much stronger when they manage to see each other again. Do you guys know what I'm getting at? I'm making sense to me, but don't know if I'm putting it through properly.
It's why I often find myself wishing I was born about 2-3 generations ago. Things are getting a bit too superficial/fake nowadays.
