Yeah I put something about the loads of upgrades in the Ferrari thread........I gues they haven't worked. Oh dear, what a shame, never mind.
EDIT: they might be starting to work.

I'm going to go out and say it. Honda are embarrassing. Three years in, this is painful and theyve run out of excuses. I'm just going to point and laugh now.

So basically it will boil down to that five second penalty, staying ahead of that.

I can breathe a sigh of relief. Would've been a lot more closer if Hamilton didn't do that penalty move but that's racing I guess.

Good drive from Vettel, calm and steady.
Good drive from Hamilton, a mix of the dirty side of the grid, 5 second time penalty and being stuck behind Bottas twice (at least 5~ seconds lost) was probably what lost it for Hamilton.
Poor drive from Bottas, very slow, overheating his tyres and just couldn't keep the pace. Props to him for moving out the way for Hamilton twice though.
Poor drive from Raikkonen, he lost multiple spots and was significantly further back. The only reason he got 4th is because their car is faster on the straights than the Red Bull.
Great drive by Wherlein especially after not racing for the previous races, Great drive from Perez. Great drive from Massa, old man drove better than Raikkonen.
As expected the Renaults dropped pace significantly in the race and slowly went back.

Its like amateur hour at Mercedes in Bahrain. Seriously, wtf was going on? They took FIVE laps to get slowpoke Bottas out of the way, that's a nice cushy +5s gift wrapped to Ferrari. Then comes Lewis, holding up Ricciardo very obviously I'm going NO NO NO DONT and then comes another +5s.
Both parties at Merc need to settle into the mindframe that the car isn't 2s faster anymore. It's 0.3 at most! They threw this one away like noobs.

Lewis is a noob for that pit lane move on Ricciardo.

If If If.... IF Hamilton had been on pole, probably would have been a different story. IF Hamilton hadn't tried to be "clever" and got himself 5s, would have been a different story. if if if....
Ah well, Can't fault Ferrari on this one. Maybe they finally have staff with a brain and are getting calls right. Bottas still needs to learn to drive this car. Hamilton, great laps showing just what the car could have been doing, and took it on the chin admitting fault for the penalty. Kimi is pretty much 100% on his last season now, he just needs to admit it. Force India with another good result here.
And some nice mid field battles.
All up, while NOT happy with the result, I can't complain too much about the on track stuff.

It's frustrating seeing a fast car losing because of the clowns in the garage and the driver having a clownish moment. The Ferrari never deserved to lead a single lap this race.
Raikkonen yeah, what a joke. That guy is making a mockery of himself...I'd applaud Ferrari if they fire him tomorrow and bring in someone else for the next race.

Exciting race overall at least because there was a chase. A chase that really shouldn't have been. Sorry to see the race gifted to Ferrari due to a penalty, it seems like Vettel gets a pass when he does something in the grey area, Hamilton gets punished the following race when he does something in the grey area. At least we know Ferrari has run out of steam for the season and we'll only have to wait for Red Bull to get their PU upgrade in Barcelona to get their number.
The midfiled is keeping the season very lively and enjoyable. Good racing back there from Force Inida, Renault and Haas.
Lance Stroll was at fault with that one... not big, but at 60/40 thing. Racing incident IMO, but again pointing the finger. Verstappen into the wall with a little too much exuberance on cold tires after his pit. Seems like both Massa and Ricciardo where just in no man's land all race.
Russia next, thankfully we'll get past that and onto the better portion of the season with the circuits.

If's - If Hamilton had managed to get pole, I suspect he would have won - If Hamilton had didn't start on the dirty side of the grid, I suspect he would have won. - If Mercedes had asked Bottas to move out the way much earlier, I suspect he would have won because just look at when Vettel pitted Hamilton instantly closed in on Bottas by 8 tenths on that first lap. - If Hamilton hadn't have broken the rules and got a 5 second time penalty, I suspect he would have won. - If Hamilton had pitted before Vettel, I suspect he would have won because of the undercut advantage that was huge today.
I'm still not impressed with the cars, lots of cars are unable to overtake after following lap after lap, lots of boring waiting. Need to reduce the downforce in my opinion.
I disagree @wb in retards to Stroll, that was Sainz's fault. Lance was already half way around the corner, Sainz just dive bombed.
The McLaren seems to be a pretty decent car other than the shitebox of an engine. Alonso makes it look easy through the corners when trying to get past much faster cars but on the straights he gets swamped. If they had a good engine I can really see them challenging Red Bull and maybe even Mercedes/Ferrari.
I love the battle between Force India, Renault, McLaren, Toro Rosso, Hass and Sauber (doing very good especially considering their Engine)
Williams are kind of on their own, Lance still isn't up to speed but old man Massa is more than capable of sticking with any stragglers from the top 3 teams.
Red Bull appears to be very very kind on it's tyres but as a result of this they struggle to get mediums and today we saw softs up to temperature.

My take is Stroll had that corner. Yes, he COULD have left room, but he also could more easily have expected Sainz to fall in line especially given he was already turning by he arrived on scene on cold tyres.
Not sure about McLaren, is it as good a chassis as it appears through the corners or is that a by product of arriving at the apex slower and having less acceleration coming out? Either way, you can see Alonso doesn't give up through middle sectors, only on straights. Given how far back some of the cars that overtook him were heading into the corners at the end of straight, you can see why. SPeed traps had the McLaren 10-15km/h down on the speeds of 90% of other cars.

Sped through the race again looking at the strategies now knowing the outcome. Mercedes are in a pickle of their own doing. They have shown that they're willing to stick to the lead driver pits first doctrine they'd written themselves when they had half a second a lap on hand pace at will. That's no longer the case.
There were at least two opportunities for Mercedes to force the hand of Ferrari, and they didn't because they're living by their doctrine and they are a team ruled by data which unfortunately doesn't always accurately reflect what's going on in the real world.
If they're going to win a championship this year. Either of them, they have to start to go for the win at all costs, at this point they're not doing that.

Mercedes have been poor in this regard the last few years.Thinking on their feet, changing plans. Not in their make up. They are a German team and stick by rules. Like you say WB, they got away with it when they had a massive performance advantage. Now they don't have it , they need to wake up. Ros wouldn't have played things that way.

If they're going to win a championship this year. Either of them, they have to start to go for the win at all costs, at this point they're not doing that. Exactly. They took 5 LAPS to get their driver (over a second slower!) out of the way, and also both drivers were on different tyres/strategy! This sort of BS only happens when Dodo Wolff is hired to look busy and important and bang tables whenever the camera is focused on him. They should've changed their approach/system after Race 1. Their strategy with Lewis was right at the end, but already lost the race with their delayed reaction asking Bottas to get the f out of the way. Can't blame Bottas for making it tough, but Mercedes collectively lost the win - a perfect example of a race which could define how a WDC can turn out. Once again, Lewis had a slow teammate who helped change the outcome of the race in favour of a competitor. Granted, Lewis added +5 by himself but he did that BS because of being stuck behind Bottas in the first place. Also did you notice how conservative he was at the start....pretty much waved Vettel through! Right there, I was thinking ok Vettel has a good chance of the win now.

the pace difference between a lot team mates were quite large during the race, Its really showing up who the top class drivers are and who are the average ones, Its stands out a lot so far this season. We are not getting that "Noah's ark" two by two at all
