Measuring the gap in performance from first race in 2014 to first race in 2015, who, of the top teams, actually closed the gap to Merc? Well Ferrari fans are jumping from the rafters after their result on Sunday, but they actually fell further back from Mercedes. They did manage to overtake Red Bull however, who fell even further back. The top team that actually gained onMercedes was Williams. Read about it here, with figures, on the judge13's site. thejudge13.com/2015/03/17/just-one-team-has-closed-the-gap-to-mercedes-this-year/

Yeah, I don't think the gap has closed in the slightest. It's just that the chasing order has changed, the Mercs were managing the gap, and even though Nico made a couple of attempts at Lewis, the Merc pace was not at their max because of fuel and tire management, that I'm certain of.

Ferrari finished 34 seconds off the lead Merc. Its clear they have made a MASSIVE improvement
Last year in Aus they finished 35 seconds off the lead Merc.
And since then they lost Alonso and developed their engine without restrictions

I think it's a bit early to really say who has closed the gap - as Merc never needed to push.
I doubt they were pushing any harder than they needed to.
I really do hope Ferrari and Williams can bring the fight to Merc a bit. Even if it's only to show up Redbull.

I agree that Merc haven't stretched their legs yet, but relative to them it appears that Williams have actually improved more than the rest.

Here's a pretty chart showing where the teams are in order and the time gained this year from last. Attachment DeletedI like nice simple charts

One really simple thing to take away from that nice simple chart is how SHIT Renault's progress has been compared to Merc. Look at Lotus.

I guess a lot of Lotus' gain was the switch to a Merc engine.
FI are disappointing and that was apparent in the race without even looking at a chart.
Red Bull have lost out to all the top teams and some of the mid field ( that's all Mercedes fault!)
And Ferrari haven't actually done as well as it seems. They've leapfrigged Red Bull which makes their improvement look better than it is. but Merceds have moved further away from them.
