We can all see how things are becoming more and more automatic, more tech, more artificial intelligence. A perfect example of this is cars, driverless cars with their awareness of surroundings, noises, light... etc.
Several technology bosses including Bill Gates, Tim Cook, Elon Musk, Larry Page and Richard Branson have all mentioned that we need to be really careful with AI because "if it's not done right we could end up with a big problem"
I can only think they are all on about a Terminator-esk scenario where Skynet takes over...

I don't think the people developing the AI and the people implementing the AI are the issue. It's the fucking retarded politicians that will make self interested and lobbyist lead agendas around it that scare me most.

We already have a big problem where humans are turning into zombies thanks to smartphones. Only no one realizes it yet. And by the time they do it is already way too late.

I think it's pretty certain computer machines will take over. They already do really clever stuff. And silly people will let them, do it.

Interesting notion indeed. I think the stuff to watch out for are the algos that drive the AI and that are already taking over things we dont notice, never mind the robots and military hardware The algos are replacing human decision makers in places we really dont want them to be doing, an once they are controlling things that physically regulate us - Skynet has arrived. Obviously you got the algos that buy and sell securities that peoples pensions an savings etc rely on. We hav a vague idea of the carnage they can cause when that black swan day we dont know about comes along. But things like deciding who should get certain health treatment, who should be deemed a security risk, who should pay more for insurance, who should get credit, who should be allowed to have fertility treatment etc etc - all theses and much much more are controlled by algos. In the old days when w have actuaries etc things could be made better and improved, but now the way its going is cloud based services with algos deciding who gets what. Now thats seriously scary as we dont know who writes these algos and what their aims are. To be clear, I am talking about everything from the algos that decide which adverts you should see to the algos that decide if you should get that expensive health treatment not. Even the legal system in places like America decide whether to prosecute some one based on an algo. I even herd that some social services are now making decisions by algos that work out if a person is a citizen or not. So you could have a person lying on the road after a crash and an algo decides whether to send an ambulance or a garbage truck to collect them (extreme example),but getting a visa is an algo, so its likely you cant travel somewhere just because an algo wasnt coded properly even though you come from there or something One day soon ALL these algos will no longer be possible to be over ridden, so imagine you have a robot nurse dispensing your medicine or a robot cop or a robot car, thats where Robocop/Skynet becomes a reality - 'sir, please stop breathing as you are exceeding theCo2 emmission threshold, you have 5 seconds to comply'

As long as they all follow Asimovs (spl) laws does it matter.

I think it was Elon Musk (might be the wrong one) but one of the tech giants mentioned that we would seriously need to write a stricter, genius proof set of robotics laws that prevent certain things from happening, like iRobot where the robots had strict laws that they cannot break for things like stopping them commiting crime, stopping them from hurting anyone... etc
With your average joe being able to do things that these tech giants can do it would also need to be heavily regulated to stop rouge robots being created.

Ideally yes. However we can see the way its going with greedy corporations and distracted governments. - Short cuts etc, thats where the problems will lie, we will have to trust profit focused firms to help create these laws as they will be at the forefront and will hire the smartest guys and the regulators wont have a clue. We see this already with things like waste disposal of hazarous stuff. The laws are written by by one set of guys, the companies involved hire smarter guys and before you know it hazardous stuff is being dumped in ways an in places that clearly contravene the spirit of the law and has a massive payback built in fo the future.
So the law says spend lot of money to get rid of certain things. Company A decides to save money by finding holes in the law. Company A saves a fortune by disposing its shit in a poor countrys river just down the road. Company B imports certain crops from said poor country. Bingo Company B start to transfer Company As toxic waste directly into the food chain, (in an ideal situation poor country is not affected
So in the same way, no matter what we scream and ask for, the politicians (who are there for a short term) are not going to look head, the private sector will be asked to promise to be good according to the spirit of the robot laws, no one but the company will be smart enough to regulate or track whats really being coded, then bingo, you will have robots that are designed to work somewhere without humans, so a company saves money by not putting all sorts of annoying protocols in, later a company buys its old surplus robots and ships them to work in McDonalds
Boom
