Simple proposition. Its obvious the McHonda project is not a spectacular instant success and that 2015 with its looming penalties is now a glorified test session. Next year will likely be competitive where Alonso can start making a difference. The team have a rookie in the wings with Max potential and wont want to lose him.

Van Doorne is kicking a$$ in the championship so far so it won't be a mistake to give him a try. Or get Magnussen back I guess. If they do make significant progress next year, I don't see the point in keeping a an extremely overpaid, over-the-hill, overrated sidekick.

I think Alonso is a longer term. There's been rumors of K'mag driving on loan next year, I just don't know enough about Van Doorne since we rarely get to see lower series events here.
So Alonso and someone else whom I'm sure McLaren haven't even decided upon.

Mclaren don't normally have a rookie in the car. Before Hamilton I can not remember the last one They did it with Maggs though. I think McLaren are willing to try anything at this point. The Honda situation will implode if there's only nothing but the same thing next year as that would mark the fourth year in a row of lackluster cars for them. Just don't think that would be allowed to happen beyond 2016 even if they have to kick Honda out. |

But Van Doorne would be a total rookie. KMag/kimi all had at least 1 F1 season behind them

Kmag was that good that everyone forgets he was a complete F1 rookie when he turned up and stood on McLarens only podium in 3 years, in his absolute first race (like Lewis)leaving his 15 year veteran teammate squealing about grip. Because of the dithering mclaren made over choosing Kmag or Button we all tend to forget Kmag was actually a rookie with near zero F1 testing actually competing with a 15 yr veteran WDC for a seat
Ron has been trying to cling on to him by getting him a seat somewhere on loan, that leaves Van Doorne who is creating the same kind of Max bug that means the last thing McLaren will want is to see him at Merc (for Nico) or Williams (for Bottas off to Ferrari)
Button has done a good job not being too scared to actually drive each weekend, but going forward apart from a debit of almost 10mill he brings nothing to the table Alonso doesnt, and only a crazed family passion team would allow Stoifel to follow Lewis to Merc just for Button to have a second retirement year of his trademark mediocrity.

I think it will be Alonso and Van D. Alonso is on a contract and has no where to go and would lose too much face by retiring. Mags will remain reserve driver or go on loan whislt Van D is given a chance to add some sponsor and media interest

Id feel a bit sad for Mags if Van D got it over him. Mags should have been in it this year. If Van D comes in and does well, that might block Mags coming back. On such small things do F1 careers hinge.........unless you're an arch manipulator.

Lol yeah that makes sense.  But Alonso is starting to throw sparkles on Le Mans and gushing about how cool they are, could be the first step to impending retirement. |

This confirms what we all thought about the saga last year - Ron, Erick Neale - no one at the team wanted Button to stay, it was meant to be Mags and Alonso. The delay was Ron trying to buy out his shareholders who wanted Button to stay. So no 'Honda want Jenson blx' it was his disturbance from the Twitmarsh era lingering with the Bharainis who dont really look beyond the hospitality tent when getting an impression of a 'good' driver
If Ron had succeeded Button would have been history, and this time round its hard to see how he can dodge th bullet when no one wants him atthe team and he adds nothing Alonso hasnt got covered - so why pay him the same amount as 3 Mags/Van Ds? Theres nothing to be gained by delaying bringing in a youngster
i always said Button in a hundred years would never be a 'Ron' driver
