Well if it's the law it isn't being adhered to. This article from the Assiciation of British Drivers points out some of the most blatant abuses. www.pistonheads.com/speed/cameras.htmI'm not against measures to stop speeding, but these cameras aren't always for that. I find the most effective measures if I've crept over the speed limit are those cameras that flash your speed at you then say thank you when you slow. I think most people would respond to these, and the ones that don't, they're the ones the police need to target.

I'm curious to find out view points here. I know you don't have much choice...if you get caught, you pay up the fine whatever it is. But suppose you get pulled over, and the cop is a 'biznessman'. He says if he goes by the law, you pay 200 pounds or wtv.....OR you can just pay him about 50 pounds and you can drive away and have done no wrong. Would you pay the 50? No. But bribing the police is such an off the wall idea here, it would freak most of us out if the cops offered that option. PLUS I wouldn't trust the police not to still issue a speeding fine after he'd taken the £50. The police in America have sex with hookers or worse pimp them. Maybe that's why they're more lax with the speeding laws, they're busy.

In Australia, every State is different in the way they approach things. here's just 2:
NSW have, along side highway patrol, fixed speed cameras. These cameras have 3 warning signs leading up to them. If you get caught, you're an idiot. These cameras are placed at known black spots AND known speeding sites, regardless of actual accidents. The theory is that they are preventing future accidents.
VIC have fixed cameras under certain motorway bridges (unmarked), all red light cameras are also speed cameras, there's a private company contracted to run roadside cameras in unmarked cars, there are point-to-point speed cameras that take an average speed for your trip, and then there's police. There is no question about revenue raising being the reason for a large part of these in this state.
BUT, end of the day, speeding is breaking the law. Sometimes people do it a lot and have to wear the punishment.

I'm sure Suzie can afford the fines. She broke the law...and if the law isn't fair for her, it's not fair for the general public either. But I care more about the general public being dealt unfairly (with the month to month paycheck) instead of Suzie "Rolling In It" Wolff! Plus I'm sure Dodo Wolff will pick up her tab.

Heard she was having a baby this past weekend, it may have already happened or it may be day to day now.

They don't only place cameras in black spots. Motorways and duel carriageways are our safest roads and their littered with them. Why do mobile vans sit on bridges over motorways? This is Scotland, but that same applies to England. Alex Johnstone, Scottish Conservative transport spokesman, said: “If speed cameras were designed to save lives, we’d place them outside schools and in other built-up residential areas. “Instead, they’re situated where these partnerships know they can get the most money from them. Our motorways and dual carriageways are actually the safest types of roads. That’s proof that cameras are not there to make roads safer, they exist to hit motorists in the pocket.” Chief Superintendent David O’Connor, president of Asps, said the location of cameras on motorway bridges was like “shooting fish in a barrel” because of the number of vehicles driving under them at close to or over the limit. “We need to make sure that the public perception of speed cameras is not that it is all about making money,” he said. “Of course speeding on the motorway is dangerous, but these are not accident black spots. There must be more flexibility and maybe it’s time to review safety cameras and how they’re located across Scotland.” Read more at: www.scotsman.com/news/politics/police-claim-speed-cameras-just-a-cash-cow-1-3316404Of the cameras I know up here, they have advance signs, are painted bright and not hidden, very occasionally there are vans in particular laybys and I don't think I've even seen any on bridges. There is one dodgy positioned layby that's used at the bottom of a hill, the camera's trained on the top where the limit changes from 70 to 40. Another thing around here is that the 20mph limit covering most of the city has been brought in, the majority of drivers are ignoring it and the police have little interest in enforcing it, it causes a lot of frustration when a driver does adhere and there's now no distinction between normal areas and areas like schools or the narrow side streets.

OMG Stoney has an avatar!?!? Yes, its in support of women in racing. So, has anyone tried driving across a city on wide open empty main routes at 20mph, it's ridiculous and impossible to stick to and I doubt its doing the environment any good.

And the ECC think we should be driving all over the city like that. It's a total pain trying to pull out of junctions or walk across roads when someone does drive slowly and you've got a load of cars trundling along behind.
