Yes, I've been remiss and haven't written a blurb about Spain. My excuse, I left China and travelled to Laos, arrived this evening...more on that in the travel thread.
On Spain.....I'm debating adjusting my pole time....downwards, but as you know, I have a hatred of meddling with things once chosen...but I think it needs to go downwards, by about half a second or so. Hmmmmm.

I wrestled quite a bit as well. You're in the hunt for the pole lead, so thing weigh heavier for you. Then there's this, everyone coming with big upgrades for Barcelona. Ferrari had their first barge of upgrades in Bahrain so they're not expected to com in big with upgrades in Barcelona. Red Bull is set to essentially be bringing a new car if rumors are to be believed. Their upgraded engine won't be ready till Canada. Given the winter testing performances, Ferrari will be the team to beat this weekend, but things don't stay static for long. Let's see.

It's the mass of upgrades that make me think I should go lower. Oh what to do. I shall see what numbers come upermost in my mind I think...

To help you with your pole guesses....
In pre season testing, Lance Stroll did a 1:20.335 on softs. At the moment that's the only confirmed time I can find (all the other time were set on super or ultra soft). Will keep looking.
*EDIT* Sorry, Kimi Raikkonen Ferrari Day Eight Softs 1:19.267 is the fastest I can see so far
*EDIT 2* Fastest SOFT tyre times: Day 1 - L. Hamilton Mercedes Grand Prix 1:21.765 Day 2 - K. Raikkonen Ferrari 1:20.960 Day 3 - S. Vettel Ferrari 1:19.952 Day 4 - K. Raikkonen Ferrari 1:20.872 Day 5 - S. Vettel Ferrari 1:19.906 Day 6 - K. Raikkonen Ferrari 1:20.406 Day 7 - S. Vettel Ferrari 1:19.341 Day 8 - K. Raikkonen Ferrari 1:19.267
*EDIT 3* For comparison: 2016 Final day of testing - Sainz 1:23.901 on softs Spanish GP Qualifying - Sainz 1:23.643

I've been looking at pre season testing times when I worked out my time. And at previous quali times. I didn't think about types of tyres though. . So are you Saying the tyres used in quali won't be as fast as the ones used in pre season testing? My time is lower than anything you've posted there and I'm thinking of lowering it.

It's funny how we toil over such details, because there's the wee-bit element of luck as well. Nine times out of ten, that's what comes and bites me in the ass.

So are you Saying the tyres used in quali won't be as fast as the ones used in pre season testing? My time is lower than anything you've posted there and I'm thinking of lowering it. The tyres that the fastest times were set on were Super Soft and Ultra Soft, neither of which will be in action at the race. I went through live text reports for all 8 days and grabbed the fastest times each day on the Soft tyre, which is the one that will be used for qualifying on Saturday. Generally speaking, all 4 main drivers and most of the "normal" top 10 were all hitting 1:19.5 on Soft tyre runs. You know that there's more pace to come, (Merc were under performing in testing, and it was cooler weather), and you know that updates will change it further, so I think anywhere from a 1:18 - 1:19 is around the money..... unless weather is a factor (haven't checked the forecast yet.) But there's also the "limit" to consider. Even with upgrades, given the nature of F1 car's, there is a theoretical limit to how fast they can actually go round the track.

In that case I'm "on the money" I'll leave well alone........... though I'd still be on the money if.........no. I'll leave well alone! Thanks for that dogued. I think Merc have brakes upgrades. That will help the times.

From what I understand this is still a track that requires power with 65 to 68% of the time being on throttle.

Yes but you have to brake for the corners...and if you do that quicker you save a bit of time.

Renault & Mercedes's solutions both look crazily advanced.
Ferrari's is a pretty unusual and odd solution, it just looks weird.
Red Bull's still looks immature, needs lots of refinement. Something that Mercedes and Renault seem to have done.
I want to see Force India and Toro Rosso's solutions!

I'm more interested in the new lighter gearbox at Merc. If they can get back most of the 6kg excess they've carried through the first four races, the balance might come back beautifully!

Looks as if my 2017 League predictions for pole this weekend may have been a little optimistic. I know it was windy and the track is still rubbering in, but I'm going to call my 1:18.313 off by as much as .5

I'm hoping they'll speed up a bit. I went for 1.18.555. I'm glad I didn't go lower now ( thanks dogued for that tyre info or I may have done!)

Now here's an interesting snippet. Fastest laps in the first four races of the season have been shared between Hamilton and Raikkonen , two apiece. What's that got to do with the Spanish GP? Nothing really. Except Spain could be the tie break.

Oh doubters begone!
Never fear, your friendly stats guy is here to brighten that pole time!
2016 FP1 - S. Vettel Ferrari 01:23.951 FP2 - N. Rosberg Mercedes 01:23.922 (-0.029) FP3 - N. Rosberg Mercedes 01:23.078 (-0.844) Q1 - N. Rosberg Mercedes 01:23.002 (-0.076) Q2 - L. Hamilton Mercedes 01:22.159 (-0.843) Q3 - L. Hamilton Mercedes 01:22.000 (-0.159)
Total Time Gained from FP1 - 1.951s
2017 FP1 - L. Hamilton Mercedes 01:21.521 FP2 - L. Hamilton Mercedes 01:20.802 (-0.719)
Given that the biggest time gains last year were FP3 and Q2, and we're already seeing gains of 0.7 from FP1 - FP2, it's reasonable now to expect pole time to be around 1:18.8 - 1:19.1 (but I've been wrong every race this year, so why break a trend!) The saving grace is that those FP1 times this year were ALL on Medium, with the Soft gaining between 0.8-1s a lap for FP2 (despite adverse wind conditions making cars slide around.)
