Track LayoutMonaco (Monte Carlo)The Monaco Grand Prix is the one race of the year that every driver dreams of winning. Like the Indy 500 or Le Mans, it stands alone, almost distinct from the sport from which it was born. A combination of precision driving, technical excellence and sheer bravery is required to win in Monte Carlo, facets which highlight the differences between the great and the good in Formula One.
The Armco barrier-lined circuit leaves no margin for error, demanding more concentration that any other Formula One track. Cars run with maximum downforce and brakes are worked hard. Overtaking is next to impossible so qualifying in Monaco is more critical than at any other Grand Prix.
The Portier corner is key to achieving a good lap time around Monaco. It is preceded by the Loews hairpin, the slowest corner in Formula One, and followed by the tunnel, one of the few flat-out sections of the track. Some great names have ended their races in the barriers here, most notably Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher.
To win in Monaco places a driver's name on a list that includes many of history's all-time greats.
Both Graham Hill, the man nicknamed 'Mr Monaco', and Schumacher have won it five times, Alain Prost took four victories, whilst Stirling Moss and Jackie Stewart each won here three times. But the record of wins in the Principality resides with the Senna, who won in Monte Carlo six times.
The race has been a regular fixture of the world championship since 1955, but in that time the circuit has changed remarkably little. Slight alterations were made for the 2003 event, in particular a new, gentler entry to the Rascasse corner, with even bigger changes in 2004, with a new pit complex and increased spectator capacity. It's Monaco weekend baby. I know it's not the prefered venue for a lot of the race fans, but that's like saying that Christmas is not the preferred holiday for a lot of religions. I allow myself the guilty pleasure to enjoy this one simply for the show.

It's been a long time since. I think we'll see some qualifying fireworks this weekend.

To answer your question, Lewis Hamilton won't let Nico Rosberg repeat 2014 Monaco error
Lewis Hamilton says he will not give Nico Rosberg the opportunity to be the first Mercedes to set a time in qualifying in Monaco after what happened last year.
In 2014 Rosberg had set provisional pole with his "banker" lap in Q3, but ran deep at Mirabeau on his second run and parked in the escape road. That brought out the yellow flags and prevented Hamilton from beating the benchmark time as the Brit had started his final flying lap later.
Hamilton was convinced Rosberg's actions were deliberate but the German was unpunished and went on to win from pole position the following day. The world champion is determined not to give Rosberg the opportunity to make a similar error this year.
"This year I will have the choice to go ahead of him so I will make sure I do that," Hamilton said, referring to Mercedes' rotating policy of giving one driver the choice of leaving the garage first or second in qualifying.
Rosberg has been victorious at the last two races in Monte Carlo but Hamilton has not tasted victory on the famous street circuit since 2008, the year of his maiden world championship.
"I don't look at it as unfinished business. The last two years I have had the car to win. The first year I struggled with it, last year I had the pace but other things were up against me and this year hopefully will be different ... third time lucky. For me I'm not worried about last year I'm just going there to win. I haven't won there in a long time so I'm going to work hard to get the balance right."

I'm going to miss quali, will be flying to China, but I may pick up a bottle at the airport in anticipation of watching him win on Sunday?

Yeah, as a reminder to all, this is the race I predicted McLaren to get their first points. Let's see if the planets align to agree with me.

I think they'll do it here, well I think Alonso might. Quali will be a biggy though and that isn't a strong point with either Button or Alonso.

I just like pretty threads with detail, doesn't take me long to edit when I know the pattern of what goes where and from where.
Looks like qualifying and race might be under rainy conditions!

In practice one today Hamilton asked "how was turn 1" to which his engineer replied saying that he can't give him that information.
Hamilton quickly replied with "How's the weather?" To which his engineer replied "Weather looks fine"
Sneaky but obvious way to get around the rules, I loved it for the comedic effect.
I personally DON'T think the ban should apply to practice sessions.

Nah I like it being banned the whole weekend....let the drivers work harder and understand if they're doing the corners well or not. It's about driving the car to the best of your ability, not also including the ability of your engineers' observance. IMO.
