The team pushed hard over the winter with its W09 to slim down dramatically the rear end of the car, focusing on engine packaging and bodywork to ensure it was as compact as possible. In a video released by the team on Tuesday, Mercedes technical director James Allison has hailed the sidepod change as the biggest area of performance improvement on a car that he says is "much, much faster" than its predecessor.
As well as changes to the front suspension, lifting the front wishbones to help improve airflow underneath the car, Allison said that there have been improvements in almost all areas of the chassis as well.

Mercedes has won 64 out of the 79 races in the last four years. It's getting old.

And those are the bits he's allowed to talk about. They say most of the advancements are not visible.
Another 3-4 years of dominance....and then I'll start getting bored. Hope that 64/79 ratio improves drastically in favour of Merc in 2018.

Turin! In the heart of Ferrari land! Audacious! I like it!
I’m near there at moment. Can’t actually drive there in the winter though. Passes all closed with snow.

Not making excuses for Lewis here, it wasn’t his best weekend by his own admission. But he could stil have been 1st , 2nd or 3rd in that race if Mercedes had got their strategy right and called him straight in with the Red Bulls under safety car. That’s three races in a row they’ve lost points because of flawed strategy. Australia- didn’t keep the window to Vettel correct and had ample pace to do so. ‘Soft wear error’ or strategy screw up. Lost them the race. Bahrain- ran the cars conservatively when pushing would have delivered a Bottas win. ( aided by kimis pit stop screw up forcing Vettel to stay out) China- didn’t bring Lewis in when they had the chance. Threw away at least a podium. MERCEDES CANNOT KEEP THROWING POINTS AWAY LIKE THIS. We’ve seen it for the past few years now. Why can’t they see it? They could get away with it with a performance advantage, they don’t have that now. The Ferrari is quicker and the Red Bull can get in the mix. Mercedes could already, in just three races have thrown away enough points to lose the drivers championship. What is it with them? Too cautious? Useless strategists? Is it their ‘Germanness, of sticking to the plan whatever?

Mercedes could already, in just three races have thrown away enough points to lose the drivers championship. What is it with them? Too cautious? Useless strategists? Is it their ‘Germanness, of sticking to the plan whatever? During the race they looked like idiots. But in hindsight, their biggest threat is Vettel and watching him was priority. Maybe the best strategy can slip you by when you are watching a target. Redbull is just playing the joker in the field and as far as they are concerned, they are not fighting for the WDC (though their target may have changed) and are going all out to cause trouble for front runners. Overall, Mercedes came out better than Ferrari so target achieved. Points may have been lost but they can't watch Vettel and always go aggressive, since I bet Redbull didn't expect that sort of advantage either. They took it because they have nothing to lose. Mercedes feared that by pitting Lewis, he would be finishing behind Kimi as well - more points lost to Vettel. Also, if Lewis had qualified better....we won't even be having this argument. I think that's why Lewis was just in 'let's forget this weekend' mode since he underachieved as well. He should expect to be racing ahead of Bottas in every race, not behind him.

I take your point about covering Vettel. But they had an opportunity to beat him and they missed it. When an opportunity like that presents itself you should take it.
The only reasons they beat him in the end were just luck
1. He was past the pit lane entry when the safety car came out and couldn’t get in.
2. Max hit Vettel
They can’t rely on things like that to beat Vettel, they have to be proactive not reactive.
Lewis certainly didn’t help with his pace this weekend, but there will be those weekends and this one could have been a much better result. It was there for the taking.

Maybe my expectations of Mercedes are just not very high when it comes to strategy. I'm just thankful they were better than Ferrari since they turned the race around before the SC.
But I'll always expect Red bull to be the sharpest team out there.

Unpopular opinion : Mercedes didnt pit Lewis to ensure equity between their drivers as Bottas couldnt pit when Charlie put on the SC in a very unfairly way (same in Australia although the situation was not the same, but still I HATE when external factors play a big role in the end result, fuck Pirelli too by the way). Toto's Policy at his finess.

I was wondering if Mercedes are putting too much aerodynamic thoughts on the front suspension set-up rather than put more focus on the tires working range like Ferrari does it with their conventional front suspension ? I was hoping for Scarbs to have a dig at it since he pointed that it could be the factor that makes Ferrari good on the softer tires in every tracks, but no answer so far so I guess this isnt a big problem. But the fact that Toto wants the legality of the hydraulic suspensions for 2021 is questionable and made me think if this solution isnt ultimately the best for their philosophy.

Toto's Policy at his finess. They did a load of this stuff when Rosberg and Lewis were together, compromising strategies for ‘equality’. They can’t afford to play these games. Should be best strategy for either car at any time. If they did it on this occasion then it really was a dumb decision. Id prefer incompetence to dumb decisions.

I say this because China is one of the most tyre dependent circuits on the calendar. If your tyres are done you have no chance, they must know that so I find hard to believe Mercedes explications. Lets see how they do in Baku.
