Thankfully this is the last race of the year where we have teams all get the same compounds in the same amounts. Last year that changed up the strategy a bit and we've been lacking that. This is a very power dependent circuit, and I don't expect to see gobs of time being taken off last year's pole time because really there's only on portion of the track where they'll be getting a big advantage with the new regs.
Hopefully we'll actually get a battle here this year as it's been seriously bland on the competition front.

PREVIEW TO RUSSIAN GP 2017
And so to Russia, last far away race before Europe. And how do things stand? It seems the qualifying speeds predicted prior to season start haven't quite been realised except perhaps in the first race. We have less overtaking, as was suggested might happen, however, the quality of the overtaking is better, seemingly less reliant on DRS, more on driver skill. I'll take that. Driver skill having a bigger impact on performance is further born out by the differences emerging between some team mates. Take the betting odds for instance for Sochi. There's no sentiment or bias involved when setting odds.....
Hamilton 1/1 Bottas 6/1
Vettel 5/4 Raikonnen 16/1
Massa 200/1 Stroll 750/1
The Red Bull drivers are much closer with Verstappen edging it at some bookies.
Betting for the championship is equally stark with......
Hamilton on 5/6
Vettel on 6/5
Bottas 25/1
Raikonnen, Verstappen , Ricciardo all on 50/1
So to the track itself. The fastest street circuit on the calendar with overtaking opportunities. Sounds good. Yet it's inaugural GP in 2014 was a bore fest. The next one was excitement aplenty. So which way will will this one go? There has been a safety car at every Sochi GP so far, will this play a part? Last year Hamilton had another of his many technicals, but made a good recovery from 10th to 2nd. An easy win for Rosberg, a nightmare for Vettel who TWICE collided with Kvyat! I bet he wasn't a popular man! Mercedes have 100% record at Sochi having claimed all poles and wins in the tracks four race History. Will it continue this coming weekend or will Ferrari upset the statistics?

This will be the first weekend I get to watch the F1 in full UHD quality (aka 4k. Even thought technically its not 4k).
I'll let you know if I can spot any difference in picture.

Don't think it's being shot in 4k yet, although I'd heard that some tests were run last year. So you're talking about just the up converting?
My cable provider is not on the 4k wagon yet. It does make a difference in streaming from Netflix or Amazon when the content is specifically shot in UHD.

So maybe they are up-converting their end first. Ive watched both Amazon and Netflix UHD, and its great.

So that's that, the world feed is UHD. But I guess until my cable provider gives me a 4k box, it's still pie in the sky for me. Interestingly they took forever to move into 1080p and now they're actually on the leading edge of 4k.

The track is suited to Merc characteristics, slow corners, fast straights, demanding on traction.
If Lewis doesn't get a win here, I'd start to get worried.

I'd put it another way. If Bottas doesn't come out ahead of Vettel here, then Mercedes is in trouble.

No worries, wouldn't affect pole times at all since the lap time would have been negated anyway with an all four wheels off the circuit rule there.

Yes! Thought it was those!! That's why I paniced about pole time! Massive handicap!

It would seem Ferrari is going through engine components almost as fast as McLaren. Would hope they can sort that out quickly before the grid penalties hit. This is the first year with the revised PU penalties, you can't take two or three new PUs in one weekend.

Sky commentary have just said that Honda have admitted Stoffle Vanvrooooooooom is using, amongst other things, his 5th MGU-H this weekend - and therefore will have a total of a 15 place grid drop ob Sunday

This year's speeds are going to play havoc with my pole guesstimates!
FP1 K. Raikkonen 1:36:074 FP2 S. Vettel 1:34:120
So Who tipped a 1:32.7?
